Hey there! I lurk on this board, mainly posting on TOS, Movies and XI boards.

Anyway, I'm a member of the Franklin Institute and just got word (it was also just listed on their website, http://www.fi.edu) that on July 31 starting at 7pm, there will be an "Evening with Avery Brooks and Samuel Delany" there! It's going to be a moderated discussion on African-Americans and their role in Science Fiction (film, written, etc.)

I think it's also open to non-members for $5.00, so it may be worth checking out!

I've already phoned them and reserved my seat for it, so if you're interested, contact the Franklin Institute!

Thanks for the heads up! I love these types of discussions, just attended a great one here NY with some of the BSG cast and some leading cybernetic engineers.

I do often wonder how Avery Brooks looks back on his time with DS9- with fondness, or sadness that the role now defines him?

Saw Avery Brooks at the Las Vegas convention last year... he came on too late in the day to talk like a prophet/monk for me to understand him. A (made up) typical scenario would be something like... "Mr. Brooks, what's your favorite color?" Answer: "The sky is dark with moisture ... wind ... rain ... does it refract?" It felt like the episode of Stargate SG-1 when they ran into the monks or most anything the character of Sir Humphrey Appleby said in Yes Minister/Yes Prime Minister.

Was there an interview with him after DS9 in which he talked about his role on the show? I know he went on to be a College Professor (At Rutgers if memory serves) but that is a guy who took on the role of Trek, and then quietly disappeared back into normal life without really being typecast that much. Kinda wish he took on another series or just a movie but it would be so fun to hear him speak.

Actually, when I was in Reno, I was watching the Discovery Channel and there was one of those educational programs (I think it was on the climate or dinosaurs but I don't recall) in which I thought I was hearing Brooks as Narrator. It was actually great to hear him again.
