Phase Two SUCKED?

What was different about the Khitumba Klingons? I take it we're not talking about a race with a code of honour.

From Memory Alpha:

The episode "Kitumba" would have established a Klingon Empire which differs from the canon Klingon Empire in some notable respects.

* The home star of the Klingon Empire is orbited by two M-class planets, the innermost planet being the Sacred Planet of the Kitumba, while the second planet, the actual homeworld, is called Ultar. The canon homeworld of the Klingon Empire is called Qo'noS.
* Ultar and the Sacred Planet feature no defense systems since the Klingons believe in their invincibility.
* "Klingons" is not the name of the species. Only members of the warrior caste are called "Klingons". There are two further castes, the Technos, which is the caste of scientists and technicians, and the Subjects.
* The Klingon Empire is not ruled by the Klingon High Council and its Chancellor. There is a ceremonial head of state, the Kitumba, who is revered as a near-god and resides in reclusion on the Sacred Planet. All political and military authority lies with the Warlord, who resides on Ultar.
* The Klingon government in "Kitumba" would have been based on Imperial Japan, much like how the Romulan Empire was based on the Roman Empire.

Wow. Sounds way better than the monosylabic losers we have endured for the past 25 years. Reminds me of Bab 5's Mimbari caste system.

From what is in the Phase II book, Jon Povil's Phase II script of The Child is far better than the TNG version, IMO. I'd love to have seen P2 with Ilia and Xon, who both seem fresh and interesting. The script for In Thy Image also seemed better to me than TMP in a number of ways.

as someone who enjoyed TMP, it's nice to imagine what it would have been like to see these characters in more stories.

The other thing to note is that, if the show hadn't been wildly successful beyond episode #13, Shatner's character was going to be promoted to Admiral - but not killed off - so Kirk could be (perhaps, if the money was right) used for "Special Guest Appearances" in the rest of the series, and turning over the ship to Willard Decker.

James Cawley of "New Voyages" is about to embark on fanfilms of "Phase II" stories!

Ian, In what I have read so far I have gotten no impression that Cawley was going to produce any of the Phase II episodes. He changed the name because he sees his series going into another phase. The intention is to try and bridge the gap between what you saw in TOS and TMP.

I really like that Phase Two script (or was it an abortive idea for TMP?) about the 'Mediator'.
It starts out - *starts out* with everyone on the ship being DEAD! Then a strange crystal cloud heals them. Long story short, a science team was studying a black hole which overloaded and exploded, destroying the Enterprise and killing all aboard. After being healed, the crew finds its way to Earth, but it looks almost Borg-like - kind of like the Macintosh 1984 commercial. No life, no vitality, just mindless automatons. It turns out this is all Scotty's fault - he was thrown back in time to WWII and was forced to bargain for his life with technological advances which he provided, and which led to the dystopian future we saw. The crystal cloud was the 'evolved' form of humanity in the alternate timeline - the race evolved before it was ready to do so.
I would have loved to see that done on film. With relatively little reworking, it would have made a great ENT episode (I can definitely see Trip turning out like Scotty did in the script).

As for Phase II in general, though: I'm glad it didn't make it. From what I saw of it, the design looked too much like TOS. Especially with the clothing - I have always hated the TOS Starfleet uniforms, and I was disappointed to hear that Phase II would have used them basically unchanged.

IIRC, from a post he made to me about four(?) months ago, they've decided to add Xon to their cast of characters, and James has all the scripts of "Phase II" which he bought from Lincoln Enterprises in the early 80s, and he recently bought some original Phase II Starfleet costumes from the "It's a Wrap!" (or Christies') eBay auctions.

If they weren't seeking to approach the original "Phase II" writers for permission to use their scripts (although legally, these scripts are Paramount/CBS property), they were at least going to try to capture the essence of the change to "Phase II".

Or did I dream all that?

If you've seen "Mork and Mindy", several security red "Phase II" shirts became Orkan uniforms.

^ That's different...Mork and Mindy was a comedy, so those uniforms (silly as they are) were appropriate for that context. :p

Ah! Found a link to that story I was talking about right here.

Actually that wasn't a Phase II script. It was one of the several movie scripts that were developed before PII after Roddenberry's The God Thing was rejected. It was, iirc, developed with Jon Povill. According to Susan Sackett, all the attempts at a Trek revival were referred to by Roddenberry as Star Trek II (since it was the second attempt at Trek). If he'd developed his ideas for a sequel to TMP, according to her book, he'd have referred to it as Star Trek III (the third Trek attempt, kinda like Phase III).

I remember following Susan Sackett's column in Starlog about the development of Phase II. I remember looking forward to it way back in the 70's.

Side question: Are there any pics of the Phase II Starfleet officer uniforms?

Yes...someone put out a big PHASE II book, which I have, which is all about that forgotten project. Inside there are pictures of scenes being filmed. And it looks to me like they are still wearing the old uniforms from TOS

^^^^^
IIRC, those shots were just test shots for lighting anf such. Those might not have been the uniforms they were gonna use, rather than just what was on-hand to use right then.

The irony of all this is, if the new Trek movie actually succeeds in re-invigorating the franchise, it stands to reason that we might see a new timeline being formed in a Phase II/TMP era with the new actors later on down the road. If it brings in the $$$$$, it could happen, I think.
