Phase II "Origins" teaser up on YouTube

Holy crap! That was great. And what I found the most pleasing was John Kelly's newfound acting chops. Not to diss the man, but I've always felt he was one of the biggest weak spots in the cast. But not anymore. While it was only a brief clip, his performance seemed very real, and not at all wooden or forced. He's apparently found his inner McCoy. And I'm thrilled.

Kudos John.

This is just a reminder that all our usual caveats apply: we shot this a month ago and this is just a rough edit; the sound hasn’t been touched yet, so it’s echo-y with background noises; musical cues are just sort of what struck our fancy at the moment and also aren’t final; it still needs some tightening—take out a few frames here and a few frames there. We sometimes put these things out as a trial balloon: although the footage is already shot, folks might make some interesting comment or observation that we might be able to address in the editing process.

As always, we welcome and value your comments even at this early stage. Your input helps us produce a better product.

That was an interesting video. Can't wait to see what happens. I didn't notice anything wrong even if its not final yet.

Looks good to me. Not really crazy about the public grilling McCoy starts to give Kirk. But beyond that I'm looking forward to seeing the rest, which is precisely what a good teaser should do - make me want to see more. Well done!

I remember a similar heated exchange on the bridge in the "The Corbomite Maneuver:"

MCCOY: I intend to challenge your actions in my records. I'll state that I warned you about Bailey's condition. Now that's no bluff.

KIRK: Any time you can bluff me, Doctor!

There was also a similar exchange in "Obsession:"

McCOY: One man has a chance for survival. The other is dead. You can add that little price tag to your monster hunt.

KIRK: That's enough, Bones.

MCCOY: It's not enough! You didn't care as long as you could hang your trophy on the wall. Well, it's not on it, Captain, it's in it!

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess...

...the reason the Enterprise is heading back to Earth in the present is because George Kirk died, which ties in Spock Prime's line in the last movie.

And I don't blame Kirk for wanting to beat the tar out of Finnegan after all those years. Two minutes of that got on my nerves.

I remember. I suppose my concern is more with the fact that in both those examples, the ship and crew were locked in battle or fighting for their lives. From what's included in the teaser, they weren't in combat; this just seemed like a routine flight home. There's (seemingly) no real reason Bones couldn't have just pulled Kirk aside to have this conversation. Kirk being moody, and Bones calling him out in it in front of everyone just struck me as "off."

I'm also assuming the flashback is to Kirk's taking of the Kobayashi Maru, so seeing the ship explode and (clearly) get destroyed at the end struck me as a cheap thrill. A better button to end the teaser on might be to have seen the bridge under fire, people being "killed" and maybe a last shot of Kirk in the center seat, surrounded by fire.

Then again, it's all hypothesis on my part so I'll gladly eat my words with "Origins" is released in full.

As I said earlier though, very well done. Looking forward to more!

Looking good. Young Kirk looks really frustrated in simulator. I'm guessing he is on the 2nd test here.

What is the latest news are the release dates for The Child and Kitumba?

When to the plan to show the Phase 2 refit?

Last I recall, the Phase II refit is on indefinite hold, so that us crusty old timers can have one place to see the Gray Lady in all her original glory.

The guy playing Finnegan looks and acts and even sounds like him. I'd be sure and keep him around for a sequel. :)

All in all good. I am a little bugged by the nod to Braga and JJ with the "Klingon Warbirds" line. Just doesn't fit for me...
