Modern sensibilities are constantly changing. Get back to me in two to three hundred years.
I still doubt astronauts would be gallivanting around in thigh high mini skirts lol
I'd consider poking the computer panels most of the people on Enterprise seems to do to be 'office work' and people wear skirts while doing such work in RL..
I don't see it as simple as that. The ones we see operating computers on the bridge are often called upon to go on away missions while on duty in that post, and the ones we see operating computers in other areas are doing so in conjunction with other duties that involve ship functions. I don't see these folks as being akin to data processors, at a desk computer all day, though I'm sure they have some of those aboard. Sure, they use computers IN their job, but that is not the nature of their job, on the whole

They are engineers, scientists, command & security officers, operations technicians, etc... this is all pretty active duty when you think about it collectively

But these characters are not 20th/21st astronauts. The environment they work in is closer to a modern office building, not a space capsule or even a space station.

Yep, the somewhat infamous variant of the early TNG uniforms where it's an option for men to wear it. It eventually just phased out in a very quiet manner as the show went on.

But really, what do we think about this type of uniform?

Me personally...It's a bit guilty pleasure yet I can totally see how it wasn't going to stick. It's a very bold type of uniform that shows how gender doesn't really matter on who wears it in this timeframe. It is a choice and nobody is there to judge on those choices which is kind of neat. As for the guilty pleasure...I am a legs man. >_>

...But yes, onwards.

Otherwise, the variant is...Something I just can't see going on in TNG. Once the uniforms got redesigned to something less spandex-ish, the skant was pretty much done. Not to mention compared the skirt version of the Monster Maroon uniform makes the skant seem like a downgrade in comparison.

My opinion...Damn those legs. >_<
I think they look silly and unflattering on both sexes.

I don't know that I agree with that. Sure, certain removed departments of the ship operate that way, but the vast majority of people you see in any given episode, who are responsible for ship operation & mission handling aren't. They are engineers, technicians, command & security officers, medical staff, etc... I'd equate their working environment less to an office building, & more to a naval base. If there are office worker type people on board, they haven't been a visible part of the production. In fact, they seem to drift away from that kind of thing whenever possible, case in point, ships no longer required a designated communications officer, which was sort of a "Working the switch board hotline" on board kind of job

I think different jobs will require different clothes, just like now and in real life. I don't expect the maintenance department in an office building to wear the same clothes as someone in sales.
Even on military bases ( And I've lived on them) not everyone wears the same uniform. It changes depending o their job.
We see people working at desks and dealing with "paperwork" on the shows. Not everyone is working with warp engines and battling hostiles.

It's true the science staff on an average day won't be in a combat situation, but they are on a ship being sent into dangerous situations. They need to be prepared for a dangerous situation at all times. Or, they need to be called in for quick, difficult repairs, evacuations, or a whole number of things that require complete mobility.

Also environmentally speaking, there's probably a number of different temperature settings just moving around the ship. You want to be in the arctic furr creature deck in those uniforms?

We see people in civilian clothes and in costumes for the holodeck all the time. This does not seem to be a concern. You dress for what ever activity you're engaged in. Be it exercise, repair or sitting at desk.
Scants aren't exactly tight skirts. Not sure if they restrict mobility. Though maybe some pleats are needed.

Probably not. The ship seems to be set for whatever normal is for the majority of the crew. Individual quarters seem to have individual settings.

It just occurred to me what these outfits remind me of. They make everyone look like they're a member of the Red Queen's court in Alice in Wonderland. You get more than 3 of them in a room, & they look like a poker hand lol

Maybe it's just me, but I've honestly never been able to see a difference in length from TOS & TNG. The TOS waist is cut lower & deeper, but both look to extend down to about the same length on the body. TOS neckline is more open, but it has long sleeves. It's almost negligible as to which is more revealing

I kind of see your point, although I think it looks better on Troi in this comparison.

Well, fashions do go in and out of style. Maybe a century later after TOS, the skirted look would be back "in"?

Oh, and let's not forget that even in TOS era, the skirt was optional, females could also wear trousers if they so chose.

It is of course perfectly possible, that men too could have opted to wear the skirt, even though we didn't see anyone doing so.

Reason for TOS and TNG dresses - its easier to do kick boxing, all Starfleet personnel have black belts in Orion martial arts.

Failed logic. Surely, if that were the case, that would make it the perfect attire for Kirk-Fu. :p

And thank god we never saw that lol

Depends on who's wearing it. Some covered less than others
