Perseverance To Set Down On Mars This Week

Perhaps Ingenuity should be renamed "Energizer Bunny." The little helicopter that could keeps on going, having completed its 29th flight yesterday (14JUN2022) with a duration of 66 seconds and traveled 179m. Looks like the software fix to get around the dead sensor worked. Its last flight was at the end of April.

The biggest problem now is that it doesn't have enough power to keep a charge through the night. Every morning, Ingenuity powers up once the solar cells have recharged the battery and JPL needs to scan for it and reset Ingenuity's internal clock which tells it when to communicate with Perseverance. The latest flight brought it closer to Perseverance. Flight 30 will probably be this fall on Earth when power levels should be higher.

After sitting around for over 100 freezing-cold Martian winter nights, Ingenuity took a little flight last Saturday (20AUG2022). While this was a quicker flight than its previous flights at only 33 seconds and covering just 6.5 feet, JPL wanted to check the flight status. Durning the winter, it wasn't able to fully charge and dust buildup on the solar powers limited charging as well. One of the objectives was to try and dislodge some of the dust.

JPL is planning on a software update to add additional navigation capabilities.

Ingenuity, the little chopper that could, has had its final flight.

At the end of its 72nd flight, Perseverance lost communications with Ingenuity when it was landing. Once communications had been re-established, it was discovered through imaging that at least one rotor was damaged during landing.

Not bad for a proof-of-concept that a stretch goal of five flights, if it even flew at all.

It had a great run........ That machine did well.

Watching videos of the rover testing I was surprised how big the actual rover is. I bought the lego version and it's pretty neat and even comes with the helicopter

On Tuesday 16 April 2024, the Ingenuity sent a final software update to have the little chopper that could wake up once a day and record a number of parameters about the state of the probe as well as environmental conditions and take a daily picture. While Perseverance has moved too far to receive any signals, it will record for future generations who might be able to retrieve the data on how things changed over time.

That's great and sad at the same time. Poor little helicopter buddy you did very well. Future humans will find you, maybe, possibly. One hopes
