Perhaps This is More "Origin Story" and Less "Nero"

I have a feeling that the first half of this film will be first and foremost an "origin story", with the "Nero storyline" not starting until halfway through -- almost like it being two separate films, with Bana's antagonist character being completely meaningless to the first half of the film.

The more I hear about this film, the more it seems they are trying to pack a lot af origin stuff into it...there isn't much more room to have a 2-hour long adventure featuring Nero as the antagonist. Even Bana has implied that his part in the film is not huge (he called it a cameo, but I know he misspoke and it must be more than that).

I can see the first hour or so of this film chronicling Kirk's childhood, Spock's childhood, Kirk's (and Spocks?) time at the Academy, and Spock's arrival on Pike's Enterprise.

The second hour+ could be the "real adventure" taking place a few years (5 years?) prior to TOS featuring Bana's character and maybe Nimoy's part, plus introducing the five other "regulars". Then at the end of the film, we will see the whole TOS crew together in the TOS era, possibly even post-WNMHGB.

I suppose it is also possible that thie whole film is a single homogeneous story with Nero being involved from the start. Maybe the screenwriters figured out a way to intertwine Bana's and Nimoy's plotline with the "crew origin" story -- who knows?

I'm choosing a "wait and see" attitude toward this movie. I'm ready to be amazed, excited and maybe even a little emotional at seeing my faves on the big screen.

If we're going on feeling, I can almost bet its not going to be so linear and one plotline will compliment another plotline in some fashion either by parallel or being directly linked. Just a guess.

I think the movie will start at the end and work backwards, and we will see a lot of shots of Nimoy staring into the mirror. Nude. And covered in tattoos.

I too will "wait and see", and I am also looking forward to whatever story they decide to put on the screen.

I've said here before that a film's plot is not as important as its execution. In any case I am very excited about the prospect of seeing the TOS characters on the big screen again -- especially with a fresh look -- no matter if itis a single cohesive story, or an epic built from two or three storylines.

But for now, all we have is the chance to speculate.

I think we will see something similar to "Batman Begins" where liam neeson's character was the main villain, yet got little screen time in favor of the Bat's origin story. Bana's "cameo" comments seem to point in that direction.

While I think the 'origin' part of this movie will play a major role, I suspect that the movie will actually start in the future (late 24th century) and introduce Old Spock and Nero, and the events that catapult them into the 23rd century.

My guess, anyway. We'll have to wait and see.

I've always suspected that this movie will have the structure of Superman the Movie and Star Wars

Jim Kirk, farm boy, becomes hero.

Well, I just can't resist the opportunity to use one of Sam's favorite internet sayings...

"I just threw up in my mouth a little."

Please, anything but another Eragon. Farm boy becomes hero has kind of lost its appeal to me.

Why is everyone from Iowa assumed to be a farm boy? Why couldn't Kirk's dad have been a professor at a university? Or, have a white collar job in Des Moines? Maybe Kirk never set foot on a farm. Happens. Even in Iowa. Just sayin'. ;)

The rumors seem to point to multiple timelines (including a "right" one and a "wrong" one?) and the Romulans starting their mischief after finding themselves thrown back in time. Nero is probably more of a catalyst for the action than a true protagonist. He sets the main conflict into motion and the story revolves around cleaning up after him.

As an origins story, this will be nothing like Batman or Superman. After all, there are seven origins to tell in this story, not one. What I'm afraid of is that could get unwieldy.
Also compared to the well-worn origin stories of Batman and Superman, there is precious little known about how these people got where they ened up. Some bits and pieces about Kirk, very little about Spock, and nothing about the others. Relatively speaking, this movie is in virgin territory here.

Well, origin stories are central to drama, and have been for... well, for as long as people have been telling stories! They're really probably the most common element of all successful fiction. That's why, often, the first movie in a series (the "origin story") is a success but later on, the sequels are... well, tedious and generally unsuccessful. Change is core to storytelling, and people want to see POSITIVE change, usually, rather than negative change. Origin stories always start off with the hero not yet being the hero, or the villain not yet being the villain... and telling us how they became what they eventually are.

Once they're there... you can either leave them at the top of their game, or tear them down. Nobody wants to see the lead of you story fall apart, do they?

My image of this movie isn't the one that a lot of people have concluded it's going to "really" be about. I agree with the OP's assertion, but I'd go a step further and suggest that Bana's character may not even be a VILLAIN at all. (Okay, having said that, I'm putting on my flame-proof undies, so go ahead and have at me!).

You're right, of course, but (assuming Kirk actually is/will be from there) have you seen Riverside, Iowa?

I've even been there. :o

My father was born about 25 miles from Riverside, and I still have two aunts and an uncle that live nearby. I can understand why someone from Riverside, Iowa might be assumed to be a 'farm boy'. :)

I grew up in Cedar Rapids, about 40 miles north of there. Many of my cousins are farm boys, but I was a city kid (if a city of 110,000 counts). Still, Riverside is close enough to Iowa City that Kirk's dad could've been a professor at the University of Iowa or worked in a bank in Cedar Rapids.

Of course, Gillian called Kirk a farm boy in TVH, too. So I guess there's no bucking the assumption. To that end, it would be cool to see a John Deere or Funk's G Hybrid cap somewhere in Kirk's quarters. If you can't beat 'em -- . :)

I am really, really curious as to how we are going to see George Kirk. If I am correct, in an interview with IESB he mentioned spending time filming on "The deck..." which I assumed was the bridge of a ship. I think it would be so cool to see him in Starfleet attire of some sort. Even cooler would be to see the birth of lil' Jimmy ;)
