Doohan was missing a finger. Scotty wasn't.

Was his missing finger ever seen on screen?

Actually, since it was missing, it could never be seen on screen, therefore it is not canon.

Also, Scotty's missing vagina is also not canon.

I didn't know Scotty had a neice as well as a nephew.

His face may be totally different, but we can't forget that terrible engineering accident shortly before WNMHGB, where he had to have his face completely reconstructed, and it ended up looking like a different person all together.
And it affected his voice, too. ;)
thats a good point, Scottie was missing a finger, I wonder if the movie will address this? however to be fair we dont know when he lost the finger.

I'm sure Trek XI will explain it as the result of the most recent of one of three injuries sustained in the line of duty, most recently in December when wounded by a man dressed as Father Christmas

Off the top of my head, his missing finger was visible in TFF, as well as in one or two episodes of TOS, though I can't recall which ones.

Edit: According to Memory Alpha, the (non) finger is also clearly visible in TNG: Relics, when Scotty speaks with Picard on the holodeck.

His missing finger can never be canon, because it can never be seen onscreen. :(

You must be one hell of a lawyer.

(Edit: You want proof? You can't handle the...um, canon!)

Agreed.

Now let's hear from opposing counsel, Mirror Cogley.

MIRROR COGLEY: "Montgomery Scott's missing finger was NOT seen in Star Trek: The Animated Series. Star Trek: The Animated Series is NOT canon. Therefore, based on the principle of Double Negative Canon (DNC), Montgomery Scott's missing finger is canon. Oh yeah, and "Enterprise" rocks!"

^I think my head just exploded.

On topic...this has to be the weirdest casting choice of the whole film. Even Carl Urban looks like McCoy in the various Photoshop images floating about, but I'm still not buying this. His lower face is way, way too pointy to look like Doohan. Sorry, J.J., but we will not accept Simon Pegg as Scotty.*

*I speak for all fans everywhere. Really.

When Pegg plays Scotty I shall switch on my Lookie-Likey Disbelief Suspension Unit, and let the acting do the talking.

Errr....yeah.

I have faith in The Pegg.

:D

So you're a strict canon contructionist? Are you awaiting the next Supreme Court vacancy?

I bet the Scots are seething it's not James McAvoy...
Has he ever done a Scottish accent on telly? Maybe in one of his sketch shows?
I just hope it's not a distraction... 'Is that Pegg's accent? ..pffft....'
(And yes I know Doohan was Canadian)

Pegg has done Scottish accents before (in Big Train and Dr Terrible's House Of Horrible to name but two), but they were different Scots accents (There are plenty, after all) to Scotty's.

I'm sure he can do Scotty's accent well enough, though. He's good at that sort of thing.

Yeah, most likely. I wonder if he's going to do an impression of Doohan, or a more naturalistic accent. And if so, which region of Scotland will he base it on?
...I can't believe I just wrote all that...
See, here in the UK, Pegg being announced as Scotty was BIG NEWS = more publicity for movie. This will bring in the UK casuals. Of course, that doesn't help in the US market.
