I dislike much of JJ's work. I'm profoundly pessimistic about him getting Star Wars IX.

So what ? He's seems to be a decent human being when so many aren't - that's way more important.

About Pegg, it seems that actors who are better known for comedy often struggle with depression in real life. But then again, it is a disease that sadly is becoming more and more common. The issue is a lot of times it is difficult to get a correct diagnosis.

I'm not sure whether it's getting more common or its more a case that it's being both better recognised and diagnosed, and people are being more open about having it. In the past, with mental illness being stigmatised, it was more common for people to just hide their condition.

And in regard to comedians with depression, I wonder whether trying to be funny is a coping mechanism for people with depression? That being the case, it might be that people such as Pegg, Robin Williams, and others, have used their comedy as a defence mechanism early in life, and then discovered that they were good at it and so were able to make a career out of it.

I agree, I dislike JJ's work on Into Darkness and TFA but he seems like a nice person

Good to see Simon get some help, and that he has good friends that care about him. Being an actor in general is a hard job. you may get paid decently well, but your out and about for a good chunk out of the year working, sometimes far far away from home. Makes it hard to keep friends, and even family. "I'm going to be in Abu Dabi for 3 months.. sorry.."

You hope that you have good co workers/actors that are freindly, and can support each other, and have fun doing the job. Maybe Simon, and others, hit a hard patch where there burning the candle at both ends, and nobody around for support. Humans are social creatures, no matter how shy or anti social you are.

I'm guessing that maybe, Simon was a happy person, wanting to share his happyness with others thru jokes, and then somewhere down the line, he looked back and seen that, yes I'm successful, but how happy am I? Do I have a girlfreind/wife/other to talk to, confide in. just the act of being held is a huge thing.

So I hope other actors ( and people in general, lots of jobs that take you away from family/freinds) get help if they need it, be vocal to a freind, even a co worker that you are depressed, or have a problem.

Even if it isn't clinical, or an illness, people have bad days/weeks/months etc. and get down. The happiest person you know has down days. Do some soul searching, find out what is missing from life, and do your best to fill the void as best you can

My opinion of Mr. Abrams just went up a notch or two. The older I get, the more I realize it's far more important to be kind than to be smart. If Abrams has made the effort to support someone with mental health issues, good on him.

Here in the UK depression seems to be a joke! I've suffered from it for years and a few months back decided to bite the bullet and accept the tablets that had been offered to me years earlier that I had rejected only to find this new 'Doctor' tells me I'm not clinically depressed so what do I know? I still don't feel any better for him telling me that!

You should find yourself a better doctor. Took a few goes before i found one who treated me a person and not a number. Hope you're feeling on top of things

Thanks, Mike! Well not really but I'm surviving and that is the fundamental right of all life forms isn't it? I didn't know that until I became a sci-fi fan believe it or not, I thought we were all very expendable in the scheme of things to be honest!

Well I don't think anyone is expendable, in the universal grand scheme of things maybe, but to your friends and family you wouldn't be.

Sorry to hear your struggling at the moment Johnnybear. Like I said get yourself a good doctor and once you do have a chat to them about medication. There are a lot of horror stories about meds, but in all serious if i hadn't gone on medication i probably wouldn't be here to typing this message to you. It can take a few tries but believe me when you find the right medication for you, it will change your world. Hang in there and have hope and always look for the small things that make you smile.

It is so important to have some kind of support. When you feel that someone has your back no matter what, you get instantly motivated and have a feeling that you are safe, and you will succeed. I also had trouble overcoming my depressive feeling a couple of months ago, but I was so lucky to have a close friend next to me, that literally stood by my side through the whole journey. I was taking therapy classes at that time and getting motivational support from this online platform [link removed] that helps people struggling with mental health issues. I was really lucky to have overcome this whole thing in just some months.
