Pearl Jam

...and I love the grunge feel to them...the best grunge singer out there.

God...it's been 17 years, and still that curse is raised.

Pearl Jam is a rock n' roll band, straight and simple. Anyone who raises the term "grunge" should have a pox put on them.

You know, I realize that you think pretty much everyone on earth but you is a total idiot. And you are certainly entitled to your opinion. However, I do not agree.

They came out of the Seattle grunge scene, and so I consider them to be a grunge band in origin.

While many of their songs (especially as they moved further and further away from Ten and Vs.) have a more mainstream rock sound to them, there is no getting away from the fact that Eddie Vedder's voice gives every song they play more than a touch of a grunge 'feel'.

And frankly, Eddie Vedder's voice is one of the chief assets that band has...and is one of the chief reasons they have stayed on top.

Additionally, while their themes are perhaps not as dark as, say, Nirvana's (assuming you consider THEM to be a grunge band), the most of the themes and overall tone of Ten and Vs. are pretty dark. And their actions in terms of how they manage their career are anything but mainstream. You don't see Pearl Jam kissing many Mainstream Music Industry Asses.

So pox away, dude. Your opinion matters not to me. Nor is it any more valid than anyone else's.

I have followed this band from the release of Ten forward...and I'll think what I like, thank you very much.

And I still think that Eddie Vedder's voice has a grunge feel to it, regardless of your 'pox'.

Did you even read my post that immediately precedes yours?

"Grunge" was a co-opted word and a genre of music totally fabricated to sell records. The only consistency to it was in the marketing so kids would think they're cool buying records from band X. You can't have a genre of music in which no band marketed with the descriptive sounds like any other...it was just marketing.

If you value Pearl Jam so much, you should look up what they think of the term. "Grunge, what is this grunge? Next time I hear the word grunge I’m gonna shit, piss, and vomit all at the same time!" - Eddie Vedder

The Melvins
The Green River Band
Mudhoney
Mother Love Bone
Fecal Matter
Temple of the Dog
Nirvana
Soundgarden
The Screaming Trees
and
Pearl Jam

All these bands were part of the development of the grunge sound...

Do you know how ridiculous that sounds? First of all, grunge was a term Mark Arm from Mudhoney first used in the early 80's to describe how shitty his band at the time sounded, and he has cursed himself ever since for coining the term. Secondly, you're telling me that Mudhoney and Pearl Jam, or Temple of the Dog and Nirvana or The Melvins and The Screaming Trees sound anything even remotely alike!?! That's like saying The Rolling Stones and The Ramones are in the same genre of music.
Of course I'm not saying they all sound the same, that would be ridiculous. That'd be like saying The Clash and The Buzzcocks sound the same. They don't at all, but they're both undeniably punk. All the bands I listed were part of the development of a particular music movement and scene, and for better or worse, that scene was called grunge. The origin of the term, and whether or not you like it, is irrelevant.
As if Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam are even remotely similar. Oh, wait...they're both from Seattle!
I listed these bands because they were intimately involved with eachother and with the development of the scene, and indeed the sound. Placing two bands in the same genre isn't saying they sound alike, no need to be all rollyeyes.

It's why I like saying "grunge movement", rather than grunge. These bands all knew each other and were connected. That's why they're all grunge bands (whether or not they all like the label or not).
