Peanuts (2015)

Flying Spaghetti Monster

Vice Admiral

When I was a kid, my parents got me volumes and volumes of Peanuts comic strips. I was a little anxious before pressing "play" on this trailer. But they seem to making something special. Plus, Snoopy's "voice" is spot on!

I also was very surprised as to how faithful that was (except for that 2001 parody, that was not something Schultz would have done).

But the faithfulness begs the question: Why, then, the CGI?

Well even "hand drawn" animation now is all sent through a computer anyway. Every cell would be scanned and colored in a computer. I agree with you that this should be hand drawn for many reasons, but at least the expressions seem hand-drawn!

The only thing I would change is the title. Schultz is on the record as having hated the title "Peanuts."

^ Well, other than "everything is CGI now", I would say since they're doing 3D it would have to be CGI, no?

It still keeps the look, feel & color of the source material, at least in this trailer.

The big question will be, how ridiculous of a plot/story will they come up with to make it movie length?

The Peanuts holiday specials were pretty simple, but by the looks of it, the new Peabody movie has a lot more going on than any of the original cartoons ever did.

Ditto with the Underdog film a while back.

I hope the plot reflects something that might have happened in the comic strips rather than some ridiculous plot (like the Peanuts interacting with our reality, like the Smurfs) or some new villain story.

You could flesh out:

- Charlie Brown's trips to camp.
- Peppermint Patty should play a part
- Spike should be reunited with his brother
- Sally and Schroeder could argue
- Lucy could start her Psychiatric help business.

Considering all of Snoopy's fantasy personas (heck, he even imagined himself as Mr. Sulu once!), I don't have any problem with the 2001 intro. :)

I felt that way when the film was first announced.

But then I thought about the two trailers for Snoopy Flying Ace -- the one with the Imperial War Museum, the other with Linus (as a barkeep) telling of the Flying Ace's legend -- and they were CGI, and I loved those.

Yes, it's weird to imagine these characters in three-dimensions, but I think in this short teaser Charlie Brown and Snoopy looked "right."

I'm good with the teaser. :)

I can't see Jean Schulz allowing anything like The Smurfs. :)

That short little "trailer", so to speak, was pretty.... "impressive" the voices of all the characters and their mannerisms seemed right. I remain, intrigued.

I'm excited for this! I don't mind the 3D, CGI presentation. As long as the story works in the film, I'll be as happy as this trailer made me.

According to this article, certain things will make appearances in this film, including:

- the wall where Charlie Brown and Linus contemplate philosophy
- The skate pond
- More of Snoopy's fantasy worlds, particularly his exploits as a WW1 flying ace.

Shut up and take my money!

I loved Peanuts as a kid (and still do). I've loved getting to share it with my three year old daughter and I can't wait to take her to the cinema to see this. :)

They could have done it in the old tabletop animation technique made famous by Willis O'Brien, George Pal, and Ray Harryhausen. But it takes a lot more time.

I'm glad the folks in this thread like it. I love Peanuts, and want this to be great. Hell, I named my dog when I was growing up "Snoopy". I haven't seen the trailer yet, but the first thing I read about it was this rather negative piece on Io9.

A fan here, obviously. This could be very good. Or it could be very, very bad.

I recently showed the old movies to my fiancee. She somehow grew up without ever seeing them. I really enjoyed the full-length movies, but I am not sure how today's generation would take them - long, drawn out musical sequences, discussions of philosophy, not much action. It will be interesting to see what they come up with now.

My niece enjoys the specials sometimes. One thing I myself find a little weird watching them now in that the kids run all over the place unsupervised. The kids spend Thanksgiving alone? And so on.
