Paul Wesley's incarnation of James T. Kirk

I think this episode was a far better introduction to Wesley's Kirk. We didn't need a big Romulan stand off with mining ships.

Chess hustling guy who can get closed off La'an to fall for him in a week is good enough.

Also, this Kirk loves his brother A LOT more than Shatner or Pine Kirk.

It's only a problem to those who intentionally misquote me.

I was posting about how his rise to Captain would play out on SNW on future seasons.

It's within the timeframe this show would potentially run for.
Don’t who that was. All I did was eliminate the photos. But thanks for the clarification.

I for one am glad that they aren't fast tracking him to a Captaincy. Not every heroic lead in Trek history needs to be some gifted officer who can charm and wink their way up the chain of command in just a few years. Picard may have had a jump from Lieutenant to Captain almost overnight when he had to assume emergency command of the Stargazer and didn't relinquish the Captain's chair for another 22 years but he then spent nearly fifty years as a Captain before finally accepting a promotion to Admiral in or around his 76th birthday.

We get it. Chris Pine's Kirk went from Cadet to Captain in one crisis and over the course of just one movie. That doesn't need to become the standard. Let our main heroes cook a little while and earn those rank braids and insignia.

Both were lieutenants.

I'm well aware of that. That's why I'm glad he's not already a Commander by 2260. Work for those eventual Captain's braids. The needs of the 2009 story pushed a Cadet into the rank of Captain by the end of that film but in this timeline let James Kirk earn that eventual Captain's chair. Besides it's more fun to think that Shatner's/Wesley's Kirk put in the hard work and effort to climb the promotion ladder so when we do get to TOS we can believe that chair is a well-deserved reward and not just the Admiralty doing a whiz kid with a handsome smile a favor.

Except Kirk was, he made Captain by 32. He's 27 in SNW's "now", which gives him 5 years to progress from Lt to LtCdr to Cdr to Captain.

Pike's interest in him from Quality of Mercy might explain the rise to come though though. We know in the mid 2250s he was an Ensign, but by 2257 he was a Lieutenant on the Farragut - a decent amount of time after graduating -- certainly not as fast as Nog made it.

SNW puts him as a Lt in 2259, I'd assume a full-blown one. by 2265 he was Captain of the Enterprise. That allows promotion to Lt Cdr and First officer of a smaller ship (Voyager had a lt cdr as a first officer) by say 2261, then by 2263 he could be a full Commander as first officer on a larger ship, or as captain on a smaller ship. Pike then decide chooses him to be captain of the enterprise in 2265 partly based at his look at the future in Quality of Mercy and realising the Federation needs someone like Kirk rather than say Una or Spock to be in charge come the Romulan attacks.

It's funny, I think on stills and pictures Wesley looks very much like an acceptable recast of the pop culture version of "Kirk".

But once you see him talking, moving, acting, everything just feels... wrong.

Whereas Chris Pine, who looks nothing like Shatner, was absolutely one of the highlights of the JJmovies.

I remember back in ‘09 folks were complaining about Pine being nothing like Shatner.

I remember back in '01 people were complaining that the NX-01 looked everything like the Akira. Wait. That's also some people now. :guffaw:

Different people, different opinions. I always absolutely loved the cast & characters of the JJmovies & DIS, despite being a fan of neither.

My biggest gripe with the NX-01 isn't the similarity to the Akira - I actually love that - but that is too flat & they really shouldn't have called it "Enterprise".

But ask 10 other Trekkies, you will find 11 different opinions, plus one guy insisting it's "Trekkers".

I remember when Enterprise was the worst Star Trek show ever.

Still is.

I was hoping this newest ep would change my mind on Wesley, but it didn’t. He’s a competent actor but he lacks charisma, charm and a command presence. Would’ve just preferred they not have Kirk in the show at all to be honest.

I dunno. For me, Shatner will always be my Kirk no matter what, but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate Wesley's take on the character. I liked him in "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow," but I probably wouldn't have if I kept expecting him to be like Shatner's Kirk. Call it what you will, but Wesley's Kirk is just a different interpretation of the character, and that extends all the way to facial expressions and the way he carries himself. The self-assuredness is there, but I don't think we'll really see this Kirk truly shine on his own merits until he's finally with Spock and McCoy. But given that SNW is still Pike's show, it's okay if Wesley's Kirk is still a work in progress, IMO...
