Didn't they just cancel a Spider-Man series?
Yes --
The Spectacular Spider-Man, which was produced by Sony. As I understand it, when Disney bought Marvel, Sony had to make a deal to keep the Spider-Man film rights and gave up the TV rights in order to do so. So the only way SSM would've continued would be if Disney had decided to pick it up. Instead, they and Marvel have evidently chosen to go in a different direction. Which is a shame, because SSM was probably the best Spidey animated series ever, and I'm saying that as a loyal fan of the '90s series.
As alluded to a few posts ago, SSM's head writer Greg Weisman now has the same job on the upcoming
Young Justice from Warner Bros., so with Paul Dini joining the new Spidey series, it's kind of an even exchange between DC and Marvel.
Not that such things haven't happened before. The '90s Spidey series' writers Stan Berkowitz and John Semper migrated to the DCAU, with Berkowitz doing just about all their core post-B:TAS shows and Semper doing
Static Shock. And B:TAS directors such as Boyd Kirkland and Frank Paur have gone on to work in Marvel animation on an ongoing basis (with Kirkland producing both of the past two X-Men animated series and Paur, IIRC, doing a lot of the Marvel DVD movies).
