Paul Dini has joined "Ultimate Spider-Man" animated series

This is the same Bendis who turned Hawkeye, Mr "Never-Kill", into one of the most homicidally-inclined Avengers out there until the writer of "Hawkeye and Mockingbird" got him fixed.

Well this'll be an interesting competition.

Weisman's YJ or Bendis's USM with a 90s rematch between the heads of Gargoyles and BTAS.

Good lord, I never thought of it that way...

However, Paul won't have Bruce Timm, Arthur Burnett or Eric Radowski to help out this time around. We can't forger THEY were more in charge than he was.

Bendis makes reading Spider-Man still possible for me in Avengers and I loved the first few arcs of Ultimate Spider-Man. I know he has his detractors, everyone has their detractors but I'm a fan. I'm looking forward to this when it comes out.

Dini doing Marvel? That's a neat twist. And Spidey's the ideal character for him to tackle.

Apparently the "Man of Action" foursome behind Ben 10 and Generator Rex is also on this show. I was lukewarm on the original Ben 10, but Rex is an impressive show so far. I hope MoA's involvement in this show doesn't mean bad news for Rex's future.

Didn't they just cancel a Spider-Man series?

Yes -- The Spectacular Spider-Man, which was produced by Sony. As I understand it, when Disney bought Marvel, Sony had to make a deal to keep the Spider-Man film rights and gave up the TV rights in order to do so. So the only way SSM would've continued would be if Disney had decided to pick it up. Instead, they and Marvel have evidently chosen to go in a different direction. Which is a shame, because SSM was probably the best Spidey animated series ever, and I'm saying that as a loyal fan of the '90s series.

As alluded to a few posts ago, SSM's head writer Greg Weisman now has the same job on the upcoming Young Justice from Warner Bros., so with Paul Dini joining the new Spidey series, it's kind of an even exchange between DC and Marvel.

Not that such things haven't happened before. The '90s Spidey series' writers Stan Berkowitz and John Semper migrated to the DCAU, with Berkowitz doing just about all their core post-B:TAS shows and Semper doing Static Shock. And B:TAS directors such as Boyd Kirkland and Frank Paur have gone on to work in Marvel animation on an ongoing basis (with Kirkland producing both of the past two X-Men animated series and Paur, IIRC, doing a lot of the Marvel DVD movies).

Yes, but that show was a victim of Disney's acquisition of Marvel. Spectacular Spider-Man, the show that was recently cancelled, was produced by Sony. Disney and Sony worked out a deal whereby Disney wouldn't seek to undo Sony's hold on the Spider-Man film rights and in return Sony relinquished the Spider-Man TV rights to Disney. Rather than continue a show of which Sony would have at least part ownership, Disney decided instead to cancel Spectacular Spider-Man and launch a new show which they'd have 100% ownership of.

Weisman doing "Young Justice" and Dini doing USM. This is a good time.

I wonder how long it will take before someone coins this show "Spider-man and his amazing friends"

Seems like they're taking a cue from "Brave and the Bold"

My hope is that they don't try to make it "too teen friendly" and stick with the same sort of adult story telling Bendis had on USM in the comics. I for one would love to see the Black Cat show up, kiss Spider-Man and then throw up when she realizes that he's still a teenager and she's at least in her 20s! LOL That was always a kind of great scene, considering up to that point, Black Cat got wet any time she saw Spider-Man swinging around.

Be kinda cool if they eventually tied USM into the new Spider-Man movie or vice versa and then maaaaaybe set up a new TV-verse where Spider-Man can interact with the Avengers! After all part of what made USM kinda neat was the fact that his powers were basically Oscorps way of making Super Soldier Serum. So it could tie into the Avengers show eventually. As long as Fury shows up, I'll be happy!

On a Disney XD show? Don't hold your breath. However, as SSM and other animated series have proven, you don't need "adult" storytelling to have highly intelligent and engaging storytelling.

That would be needlessly crude, I think. And in SSM, they did make a regular thing of the teenage Spidey getting very nervous and uncomfortable at the fact that this gorgeous adult woman was coming onto him on a level he wasn't anywhere near ready to handle.

Not gonna happen, at least not the first part. Sony still holds the movie rights to Spidey; this show is produced entirely by Marvel and Disney. So it's not going to have any ties to the movies.

As for the second part, we've been told all along that this show will regularly be teaming Spidey up with other Marvel heroes, so interactions with the Avengers are entirely possible, though they'll probably be in a separate continuity from the Marvel live-action feature films. And probably in a separate continuity from the upcoming Avengers animated series, seeing as how all the Marvel animated shows these days seem to be in independent realities (in odd contrast to their current movie strategy).

Yeah they said that Spidey will be redefined and guest stars will be cropping up...they will be taking some stuff from the source material but this isn't a straight up adaption.
