If there were any lingering doubts about Mr. Stewart's acting ability, they will be dispelled by reading Ben Brantley's review in todays (2/15) NY Times, about his performance in "Macbeth". I hope I can get tickets.

What are you thinking about it?
How very excellent it was. Probably in the top 3 productions of Shakespeare I've ever seen; about the Asian horror influence; the great use of lighting; the witches and their beards; the way Patrick ties Macbeth's bowtie; how I want to see it again; how theatre is so fleeting compared to film and dvd; how it cost a fortune to get to the performance and stay overnight in London and pay for the tickets but how it was worth every penny; how great Banquo was, how Malcolm is a pretty lousy role no matter how wonderful the performance... just those few things.
Sadly I wasn't able to get down to London to see this play. All the good reviews and awards (Oliviers: 9th March) are just driving the nails in a little deeper.

I just saw "The Scottish Play" this past Sunday and loved it very much. I fortunately bought the tickets in mid January, since the run is sold out. Loved the audio visual effects, especially the blood flowing across the wall in the banquet scene. Loved Patrick's dancing.
I've been a fan of his since "I, Claudius". This is the 4th time I've seen him on stage: "The Tempest" in Central Park twice, "Christmas Carol" one man show and "The Caretaker" both on Broadway.
Note that at least two TOS episode titles are from "The Scottish Play" - Dagger of the Mind and All Our Yesterdays.

On second thought, since there are probably people here who earnestly espouse black being white, I guess I shouldn't be surprised...
I've seen posts here calling him a hack, and a, IIRC, "bombastic ham". I always felt he was the best actor ever affiliated with Trek.
One of the greatest challenges about acting for a franchise such as Trek is that in such a fantastical world, so much of everything you say is purely made up, and it subtly shows in many a performances by other less gifted actors that when they speak about tachyon fields and subspace distortions and any number of randomly made up alien spaces, that they don't have a clue what they're talking about.
Patrick Stewert though just had that ability to make those alien species and extreme scientific phenomenom feel real. When he sits down with Riker and company to tell them about the political instability on some made up planet, his line delivery makes it real in a way later captians couldn't quite do so. This of course had a positive effect on all the cast members.
Even with all the fancy sets and expensive special effects, if the actors aren't completely able to inhabit the world they are in, then the whole illusion of the 24th century falls apart. Casting

I'm a TOS die hard and grew up watching it. Kirk has always been my favorite. That being the case, Patrick Stewart is by far the greatest actor Trek has ever seen. My #2 captain, as I'm also a big fan of TNG, but clearly the best actor.
I was just watching video of Stewart's appearance on Regis and Kelly this week, and there's just something about him. He has such a commanding presence, yet seems totally approachable. I honestly think my head would explode if I ever met him in person. It'd be such a surreal experience.
Even though nostalga for William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy is currently at an all-time thanks to the movie, as others have said, it is Stewart who bears the title of finest actor in Trek. He gave us so many good years.
