Patrick Stewart looks super fragile.

My mom's husband just turned 81, and still teaches skiing 5 days a week at Vail, and in the summer leads bicycle tours around the resort.

This fall they're going to tour China and Southeast Asia for four weeks.

They have a co-worker who's 93 and just this year went from teaching 3 days a week to one day because she's 'slowing down'.

My high-school history teacher from 30 years ago, just retired last year at age 88; but is still a substitute teacher.

If you think 79 is old and frail, I'd like to have half the stamina they do when I reach that age.

People age at different rates. For a lot of reasons. Some people seem feeble at 70 while others are energetic at 85. He does seem noticeably declining, but not unusual for his age. Also, this isnt a one-man show on Broadway. There will be a larger cast, including young people I am sure. There will likely be opportunities for the show or for spinoffs to continue even if it turns out Patrick Stewart doesnt have that many years left.

I want to see a 24th century depiction of a nursing home! Episode 1: Picard drinks tea while Geordi stops by to say Hi. Episode 2: Troi comes over and makes him soup. Episode 3: Picard calls Wesley to see how he is doing...

Isn't this just All Good Things?

So the approach of the series could have a DS9, "The Visitor" approach where a young person could be Picard's aid on adventures or he maybe guiding this person to a promising future?

Patrick Stewart is just fine. I’m more concerned whether the show will suck rather than how old the guy is. And if the show does suck, it won’t be because Stewart is 79; it will be because the writing is crap.

Whatever this series will be it will be limited, I doubt Stewart will be doing this too long. Whether the series's writing is good or crap it's all subjective. I'm positive when it streams it'll get the same response that DISCO received, mixed. Some will love it, hate it, and some will find it to be okay.

So, every Star Trek, TV show, film and theatrical production in the whole of human history.

Also, it is a limited run series, not a full series like Discovery, so, yes, Stewart is not doing it long.
Except Orville. Everyone loves Orville or pretends not to love it.:)

Jason
As much as I enjoy the Orville at times I cannot use the term "love" here :)

Wow. I guess since your mom's husband teaches skiing at 81, then Patrick Stewart is in great shape.
The two have no correlation at all.
I've seen people in their 30's who can barely walk.

If the script calls for Picard to trash a gang of bikers, he will.

They'll fix it in post-production.
I would totally be his stunt double if I could.

Also, firing a phaser doesn't require a lot of physical exertion anyway. But I doubt they'll put the character into combat situations beyond ship vs ship.

I think Stewart looks pretty damn good for 79. He's obviously still in great physical shape for his age besides the arthritis (he can still prop his feet up on tables - something many people 20 years younger can't do), and still seems mentally sharp.

His voice is much creakier than it used to be though, which likely means he'll have to do a lot more takes to get scenes right.

I don't know if he has any hidden medical issues, but just based on his more recent TV appearances I thinks he looks quite fit for his age. I mean what do people expect? He is really old. Naturally he also looks really old. But as he also plays a really old guy, I don't think this is a problem. Of course with his age something could always happen, but as long as it doesn't, no need to expect the worse.

The series will also only have short seasons and who knows how prominent he will be in it. I bet he won't get as much screentime as SMG in Discovery. And he will definitely do less action scenes.

Whatever the navel gazers are thinking about DISCO it is not the lofty success they think it is

Yes, all the news about new additions to the franchise certain sound like the franchise is on its last legs.

*pauses to laugh hysterically*

Bravo on the ageism in this thread, y'all. Give yourselves a hand.

That said, I suspect that Stewart is in this to provide closure to the character. I don't think he has plans to do seven seasons of this.

This shows how desperate CBS is to get more subscriptions to their ALLACCESS service. Whatever the navel gazers are thinking about DISCO it is not the lofty success they think it is, and CBS has to milk the well and throw sh*t at the wall hoping it'll stick.

Hahaha. Don't make me quote Parrot Analytics at you.

Ah...I'll do it anyway.

Star Trek: Discovery has been recognized as one of the five most in-demand digital original series in the world.

And some CBS.

“My goal is that there should be a Star Trek something on all the time on All Access,” Stapf said. “We know it draws an audience, and Discovery has done quite well.”

Disco's sure a flop, alright. LOL.
