I don't think he was ridiculing it, he was just having fun with it.
Patrick Stewart succeeded in raising awareness, he got us all talking about it. Does it really matter if he dumped the ice bucket or did his own variation instead?
Right. On the same token, I seriously don't think Gerrold was mocking it either, nor anyone else with some sort of variation. And I doubt this was Stewart's intention, but he seems like a very aware, very thoughtful man, so what if it promotes the idea that one's compassion and empathy should be so great that they *don't* need to walk a mile in someone's shoes in order to help? To me, that's already cutting out the middle man. After all, the ultimate goal for all these donations and research and healthcare is to find a cure so that no one ever suffers from ALS ever again.
