Paramount working on DS9 HD?

I never understood who likes TMP but if it gets DS9 remastered I will check it out.

i guess it was a novelty in 1979 to see the TOS characters on the big screen.

Unless you were going to the conventions. They often shows TOS episodes on a big (well, medium-sized) screen for an auditorium full of people.

I'm not as familiar with Mark Altman as the average fan-big-enough-to-post-on-internet-forums. Is he in the habit of just, like... breaking this kind of unannounced news...?!

He was certainly hinting about TMP long before it was announced, and I don’t think he’d blurt this out without it coming from a good source.

His co-host is Daren Dochterman, who produced the TMP Director’s Edition, but obviously he couldn’t and didn’t say anything until it was announced.

Very cool, thanks.

Yup.

Cost to benefit ratio.

And there in lies the rub. Unless they find a very cheap way of doing it, DS9 is unfortunately not popular enough to warrant spending big bucks for a HD restoration. TNG was. However... do we know if they even made it in the clear on the TNG-HD project?

This is where the calculus has changed. When they remastered TNG they thought "Hey, people will buy this on blu-ray!"

Now the problem for Paramount is "Hey, if this isn't in HD then nobody cares if this is on Paramount+ or not." They've made a big deal that P+ is "The Home of Star Trek". And DS9 and Voyager are a huge chunk of available Star Trek.

There is a fair point to that. However, DS9 and VOY are still only a small percent of what would be watched on P+. I know people who love TOS and TNG but don't care about DS9 or VOY. So you're catering to a small crowd. Again, it comes down to if the expenses can cover what can be brought in.

I misremembered

https://www.startrek.com/en-ca/news/netflixs-top-10-most-re-watched-trek-episodes

TOS and TNG had bigger audiences, but DS9 and Voyager have more return viewers.

The Next Generation and The Original Series can claim the largest audiences on Netflix, but Voyager and Deep Space Nine fans are better repeat customers, more likely to return for their favorite episodes.

This is from 2017, shortly before Discovery launched, so it's not exactly up to date info.

Voyager at the time also had the most rewatched episode(s) of the franchise, Endgame.
That doesn't count series premiers or second episodes.

I have to agree...if Paramount are aiming at just satisfying your friends, we're all in big trouble. ;)
Which is the problem. People insist, insist to a T, they will buy this. I doubt as many who say it will do it.

So, is it enough to pay the cost?

If it were a novelty, we wouldn't have all these upgades, releases and screenings over the years. And I certainly wouldn't keep going back to it.

A person either likes a movie or they don't. I love the damned thing. :rommie:

Add my fervent hopes all this leads to an HD release of DS9.
