Paramount working on DS9 HD?

It's the same reason why video games don't bother me either. People will say "Oh, the graphics must look like X" and I'm like "Y?" (pun intended). If the game is gripping in its own right then HD graphics are not going to be the make or break for me.

Video games are an interesting case. Even more than TV, early video games were specifically designed to take advantage of certain display quirks of a cathode ray tube TV, specifically how the pixels blur together. As a result they look significantly worse than they are supposed to when displayed on a modern flat-screen monitor.

I keep reading the thread because I hope more people who have upgraded to HDTV and HD players will post about their experience - does everyone who has done that find DVDs unwatchable? I am not crazy about making my entire DVD collection obsolete overnight, and there are some that have no prospects of every being released in UHD.
"Unwatchable" is a strong word. "Suboptimal" would be my description. :)

I still watch a lot of DVDs on my HD equipment where Blu-rays are not available. In my experience, how good they look upscaled has a lot to do with the source material -- especially whether it's a show that was shot and finished on film, or whether it was shot and/or edited on video.

For example, my Adventures of Superman (1950s) DVDs look a lot better than my Superboy (1980s) or Lois & Clark (1990s) DVDs. Why? Because the first is from film sources, the latter two from video.

Like a lot of shows of its period, DS9 was shot on film, but final editing was done on video. This was faster and cheaper production-wise, but resulted in lower-quality visuals. The TOS DVDs always looked better than the Berman-era shows, even on SD equipment, because TOS was finished on film, with its higher resolution.

Another factor is the settings on your TV. When I first got an HDTV, my DVDs of the 1970s Wonder Woman TV series looked terrible at first, until I switched the TV's auxiliary input picture setting to "Cinema." After that, they upscaled very nicely (again, the DVDs having been mastered from film sources).

Bottom line, I would not hesitate to upgrade to HD equipment for fear of rendering your DVDs obsolete. Some discs may suffer a bit, but the overall benefits of HD are very much worth it, IMO.

Hope some of that's helpful. I'm also going to @Ovation here, in case he'd care to comment on my comments, or otherwise weigh in. I've found him to be a knowledgeable source on this subject.

Of course the episodes are watchable. Honestly, in my life I have sat through much worse in terms of picture quality.

What We Left Behind though… as Tallguy said, that’s the eye opener.

The company I work for was solicited for VFX work back when Paramount was initially considering DS9 HD right after the TNG sets, and for what it's worth, the folks in management I've asked about this have heard nothing about any new DS9 remaster. That doesn't necessarily mean anything, but given that we're looking for work literally anywhere we can get it due to the strikes I find it odd if such a project really is happening.

That's useful to hear - it's still very much in 'pinch of salt' territory so I'm really trying hard not to get my hopes up!

I’ve seen some posts on Facebook from Trek-connected folks asking after people who worked on DS9 or TNG-R, which I can’t find anymore, so that could mean there’s something to it (I don’t see why the posts would’ve been deleted if there wasn’t actually something someone was trying to keep quiet, but I could just be looking in the wrong places and they’re still there, hidden by Facebook’s crappy search features).

That's what I was afraid of. Probably best to assume this isn't happening until it does.

I finally watched What We Left Behind yesterday after you all mentioned it. Yeah, definitely eye-opening! I'm glad I saw it. Behr obviously loves the show and it's cast and crew. The "writers room" was fascinating. I really really REALLY wish they'd gotten to do that season 8. I think it's time for me to re-watch DS9 soon.

Would love to have an HD remaster...but it always seems to be on the porcine ascension plan.
