Paramount and WBD in merger discussions

Why do I get the feeling that Zaslav will someday be exposed as some kind of Harvey Weinstein type of monster that will partial break the movie industry like what happened with Weinstein.

While I doubt Zaslav is any kind of angel, it's quite a leap to accuse someone noted for their idiotic business practices of being one of the worst kinds of sexual offenders.

I didn't accuse him of that. I said I had a feeling. Feelings or suspicions can be wrong or right but they are not really statement of facts.

I could see Section 31 releases before any deal is struck as that would take a year or so. it's only a Streaming movie not an entire season of a show.

If I was a journalist or something I would agree but we are just people talking about whatever stuff we have on our minds. Trekbbs is also not exactly the New York times. People say all sorts of stuff on the internet and well most of it is just a collections of thoughts and feelings over this and that. In essence we are not important enough for our words to matter on same grand scale. I know because I have been trying to save the world for years now by posting on the Trekbbs and yet somehow it's not working.

This is great news.

I would support Trek under the Zaslav regime. He's been making some wise business decisions so far, and it looks like WBD is recovering to the point where they could indeed acquire the near-death Paramount.

This merger could be Paramount's only chance to stay afloat.

IDK if a Paramount-WBD merger actually goes through.

I feel there will be a merger with Paramount and Peacock, while WBD gets gobbled up by Amazon
Paramount/Peacock would be problematic for antitrust reasons.

The only way it could work is for Paramount (or its parent company) to sell off Paramount in pieces, since they can't sell Paramount/Viacom whole to Comcast (Peacock's parent company), given Paramount/Viacom controls CBS and a merger with Comcast, which owns NBC/Universal, is probably never going to fly since the US government is not going to be cool with one company controlling that big of a share of the broadcast networks.

The thing that would make the most sense and be the best for consumers? There were reports in early December that Paramount has had discussions with Apple about combining their streaming services. Apple has money to burn, license your library to Apple+ (i.e., Top Gun Maverick, Star Trek, CBS News, Showtime series, etc., on Apple+), let them deal with maintaining and promoting the streaming service and Paramount is responsible for providing content as the in-house studio for Apple. Everybody gets to keep their own people and infrastructure in place, but Paramount basically becomes a content producer for Apple.

The only issue with the Apple option is that it's a sort of long-term lateral move. And if Shari Redstone is trying to cash out, it's not the kind of deal she would want. You take the Warner Bros. Discovery deal if you're looking to get your money and get out.

Apple and Disney were also having talks. I think Apple is looking at all the players still in the game. Everything just consolidates more and more.

Wasn't there one article saying they made their least losses in ages because they weren't making any content during lockdown?

And because of the tax write offs. Zaslav got a $300 mil bonus for it all. The other streamers took note, that's when they started looking at doing the same thing. Then the next quarter they were in the hole again.

God this is nothing but bad news, Trek being under CBS/Paramount as their main appeal at least kept the money rolling in, but as part of a huge conglomerate who really is only concerned with top earning series...not great. Look how the Warner properties have been treated.
Our only hope is that they see the appeal in keeping SNW under the current showrunners and keep Lower Decks running. I suspect if this happens by the time STA gets going it might be shortlisted for a cut. Who knows, maybe i'm being pessimistic but I certainly don't want to enter another dark age again.
