Parallels between Trek XI and TMP Launch

Not sure if this has been brought up yet or not but I think its worth considering the similarities between the launch of Star Trek: The Motion Picture with Trek XI.

If you watch the Motion Picture Teaser its interesting how initially it concentrates on fleeting images of the "Updated" Enterprise much like what we are seeing in the new trailer.

What most of us are feeling now must be similar to what fans felt back then when they were introduced to a Big Budget equivalent of the 1701 from the tv show. Now it is happening all over again and this time we are getting an even bigger budget 1701. The problem is the bigger the budget, the further away from the original design it gets.

Its also worth mentioning the crew changes that roddenberry introduced in TMP, Stephen Collins, Persis Khambatta and it makes me wonder what is really in store for us when the actual trailer comes out.

Hope I'm not rambling here, what do you all think?

Yes, minus the groovy disco stylings, I thought the new teaser trailer and TMP's teaser have a very similar feel to them.

TMP 2.0
( imagine a Orson Wells style voiceover )
~ Random shot of new ship ~
Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk
~ Another random shot of new ship ~
Zachery Quinto as Mister Spock
~ Yet another random shot of new ship ~
Carl Urban as Doctor Leonard McCoy

( and so forth and so on )

Star Trek - A JJ Abrams Film

* Wouldn't that be strange ? *

"The problem is the bigger the budget, the further away from the original design it gets."

They combined the TOS, and Phase II movie refit (became the Phase II tv series design then TMP design) the designs.

What's the problem?

^^ I guess I am torn between loving the constitution refit and the desire to see something new and fresh. So your right no problem really I just want to have my cake and eat it.

I see your point, and I would like to see a similarity of seeing the Enterprise launched from its dock (but after being built in space...just add guys in space suits to the trailer :D)

Its interesting to see the reactions and see that a large part of the community are deeply routed in what the know and dont like the idea of change. Wonder how many of them are first gen TOS fans and what their reaction to the TMP ship was.

Then again the TMP ship was supposed to look different, the hard part people cant get over is there being an alternate to the TOS one

We will see the parts built on Earth, then lifted into Spacedock. Construction will be finished there, and the Enterprise will be launched.

That's the reason the plaque says "San Fransisco Navy Yards".

oh wait...

:tin foil mode on:

"OH MY GOD! THE ENTERPRISE IS BUILT ON EARTH!!?? WE WON'T SEE IT LAUNCH FROM SPACEDOCK!!!! :scream: :censored: :brickwall:

Not TMP related, but another parallel is that TNG was also considered a "relaunch" of the franchise. It occurred 21 years after the debut of TOS. And now the new movie - another relaunch - is happening 21 years after the debut of TNG. Which means that this year TOS is exactly twice the age of TNG.

^ I think you have that backwards ! ^
TOS = 42 years old this September...
TNG = 21 years old....

* Just thought i'd point that out *

Well, I'm one of those first-gen TOSers, and to be honest, I was quite pleased with the look of the Enterprise refit in TMP (those who have followed my posts here over the years know that TMP is my favorite Trek film to date).

As long as the new ship doesn't sprout a third nacelle (which it doesn't appear to) or have wings coming out of the secondary hull, I'll be happy.

Yeah, this is like anticipating TMP all over again.

I agree, and me too. I remember seeing the new Enterprise in 1979 and being totally blown away.

The TMP design is the pre production Cage design from 1964.

1. The bridge module, main sensor dome, impulse engines, secondary hull, curved dorsal, the deflector shield grid on the saucer section, and secondary hull, the vertical lines on the dorsal, swept back pylons, and the horizontal lines on the edge of the saucer were given to the Phase II movie design.

2. Everything from above, and the shortened height, and increased length of the warp nacelles were given to the Phase II tv series design.

3. Everything from above and the full internal main nav deflector was given to the TMP refit.

The Star Trek XI is the pre production Cage design from 1964.

Watching that trailer in the above link sure brought back some memories. I remember seeing that in the theater, in October of '79 if memory serves. Good to see another person here who feels the same way about TMP refit E.

The nacelles do appear to have sprouted wings and rotor assemblies - probably for operating in atmosphere. Whoa!

I kind of agree, In Trek XI I think these huge nacelles are primarily for launching the enterprise into space through an atmosphere. Once in orbit they will be separated from the ship much like the SRB separation on the shuttle. Or for those of you who remember the Lost in Space remake, when the real Jupiter 2 appeared after separating from Jupiter 1.. Might happen here too.

Once the nacelles have separated, the "REAL" ones will deploy. (Similar to how the Pheonix did it in First Contact).

Of course I am saying all this in jest. I don't actually believe this.
