So, tomorrow being Ash Wednesday means that today is Shrove Tuesday - or Pancake Day for the heathens among us :p

(It's also Mardi Gras, but that's a different thread for someone else to start...)

I was sent a link to a recipe for baked German pancakes today which I am going to try tonight

Who's making pancakes today? Any favoured recipes?

Maybe it's a British thing - for us, Shrove Tuesday is the day for eating pancakes. There's meant to be some tenuous connection to the bible, but I forget what.

Well for what it's worth, I have only heard of Ash Wednesday and never really bothered to find out what it was until just now. So this pancake-eating day was completely off my radar.

I fully support the creation of a day dedicated to the eating of pancakes.

I think I was told as a child that it's about using up all the good stuff in your larder before heading into the forty days of fasting misery that is Lent.

But now it occurs to me - eggs, flour, lemon-juice and some Nutella if you're feeling fancy - that's not exactly the stuff of luxury is it?

This may require Googlege.

In conclusion: Yay pancakes!

 Fair point, but that is the true story - you have to remember that eggs, flour and milk were the contents of most people's stock cupboards in the days when the peasants were expected to observe lent by the church. This meant no meat, dairy or eggs during the period. Even royalty was expected to observe this, which meant the English court ate a lot of fish during February and March.

Potato pancakes sound delish right about now! Us frumpy old Baptists don't do anything fun like this! We just do lots of potluck. *Sighs* I think I might convert . . .

Lent totally sneaked up on me this year. NOT FAIR. I'm not ready for Ash Wednesday!

It was Shrove Tuesday?

I completely forgot the pancakes on Jif Lemon Day!

I miss the Jif Lemon adverts.

I know, it seems to be really early this year. I don't know if it actually is or if it just seems that way.

I thought this thread was going to be about the International House of Pancakes National Pancake Day.

Trust them to do it on the wrong day! Today is International Pancake day :techman:

Our house is truly an international house of pancakes - this evening we had German baked pancakes (a success!) and American / Canadian pancakes, and I also make English and Swedish pancakes :)

:( I heard it was Pancake Day after I had already made a pot of minestrone for our dinner.
German pancakes. My faves. Nice hot apple compote on top. Powdered sugar. Good luck with them.

What does Shrove mean? I've never heard of this day.

EDIT: Nevermind, I looked it up. So it's basically Fat Tuesday...except you're supposed to feel bad about it? :p
