P/C run amok...

Indulge me for a bit here: wouldn't Bev be more intellectually suited to someone like Riker? I don't mean to tread on the imzadi thing or to particularly dismiss P/C, but don't they have far more in common than her and Picard?

I've never really watched any TNG eps with an eye to R/C, but ocassionally its potential has caught my eye. A friend of mine is convinced there is something going on between them in the universe where Riker is captain of the Enterprse in Parallels.

^ She tells me there's a briefing room scene, and Bev's eyes are sparkling when she looks in Captain Riker's direction.

Plus whereas all her little 'come on' signals seem to flat with with Picard, surely Riker has demonstrated that a woman only needs to look at him in Ten-forward for him to steam over in full seduction mode?

There was no doubt when I last watched 'Encounter at Farpoint' that R/C was left open as a relationship option!

Plus there was all that touching for a number of episodes in season six; Frame of Mind particularly jumps out as does the corridor scene in Suspicions.

Off the top of my head, those are the couple of potential R/C moments that caught my eye, although to be honest, I don't get much of a vibe from them in Frame of Mind, although, I think there might be more of one in Suspicions. Oh, the noble art of connotation and reading sub text!

Absolutley. Wesley was trying to set them up in the first scene. He was practically pimping out his mom.

I can see why some of you think that, but I just interpreted it as him wanting the two of them to be friends, as Crusher said. As for Riker himself, I think that he really just wanted to make a good first impression on one of his new crewmates.

I'm a bit late to the dicussion, I know! (At home on a dial-up connection at the moment, and it's not exactly conducive to forum surfing.) Anyway....

In my opinion, Wesley definitely wanted his mother to get together with Riker in Encounter at Farpoint. Think about it: he's fifteen, he hasn't had a male role model around, and all of a sudden he meets the cool, heroic Commander Riker. Who wouldn't want Riker as a stepfather? Better than that stiff, boring Captain Picard, at least. ;)

It is clear from the start, though, that Beverly is *not* interested in Riker at all. This is confirmed in "The Host," when she is pretty aghast at the idea of Odan being in Riker's body. When she is discussing it with Deanna in Ten Forward, she almost shudders.

So the relationship that they do have is more of a brother/sister one, although I agree that there is a LOT of touching in season six. Beverly and Will are probably the two most tactile people on the crew, so it makes sense that they would touch each other casually, I suppose.

Having said all this, I can imagine another version of TNG where they were interested in one another. Riker is much closer to my idea of what Jack was like than Picard is. And, as mon capitaine said, he is certainly more like Beverly personality-wise. I wonder if they were ever intending to do something with Riker and Crusher in season one, or whether the scene in E@F was just a throwaway? Because it would have helped slow the P/C thing down a little bit (which would have been a good thing IMO, given that it seemed like they were on the verge of getting together for virtually the whole season) if she had also had a flirtation with Riker.

Well we've seen a few examples of how Picard and Wesley are good together and care for each other in the series.

Samaritan Snare (me thinks?) wher Picard needs a cardiac replacement..... Wesley is REALLY not looking forward to the long ride with Picard but he loosens up and Wesely actually has an enjoyable trip with him. Picard discusses his youth, the fighting with Naussicans and when Wesley asked him abotu family and children didn't Picard say somehting like: wishing for somethnig doesn't make it so? (I'm probably wrong so do correct me if so!)

Then in Final Mission. Note Picard's protective treatment of Wesley. Then when Picard is injured, Wesley shows a great deal of care and concern for him and once again their discussion, etc goes far beyond simple looking after an injured officer. They really seem to care for each other alot.

Again, in The Game: Picard and Wesley having tea in Picard's cabin. Sharing experiences, Picard talking about carving "AF" into a prize elm tree of Boothby's.

Picard also boots Wesley up the ass when he needs it: The First Duty and also Journey's End.

There are many examples to show that Wesley and Picard have a good relationship. Wesley may have felt Picard was boring and stuffy to start with but that changes and Wesley seems to enjoy his company.

And why does everyone kepp saying Beverly would be suited to someone like Riker becasue he's more like Jack? What's that got to do with anything? Does that therefore mean that BEverly will only date people with a personality like that of her late husband? Will she only date ONE type of personality? Same goes for you: have all of your boyfriends/girlfriends, husbands/wives, or whatever all been similar in terms of peronality? I doubt it.

Picard maybe stuffy and reserved with alot of people but from what I see he is NOT that way with Beverly. There's alot of banter between them. He also has a lot of affection for Wesley and he certainly doesn't seem stuffy with him later on in the series.

PS

Picard was never stuffy in realtionships from waht we saw.

He may not wear his heart on his sleeve with everyone he meets but with women he cares about he is very affectionate.

EG
The tenderness he shows Vash at the end of Captains Holiday.

The tenderness he shows Beverly in Attached (even thoguh she didn't want it)... he is very tactile and so gentle and tender.

Thus, Picard is very far from being a stuffy old man one can never get close to. He is quite the opposite. He is just not open about everythnig with everyone he meets.

I for one would rather have a more reserved guy than one who flirts with everyhting in a skirt (like Riker).

I don;t think it's right to say Beverly is not suited to Picard becasue he's reserved: he's very friendly with her anyway and is not reserved wtih the women he is involved with.

Well, exactly. The development of the relationship between Wesley and Picard is interesting precisely *because* they were so uncomfortable around each other to start with. Picard quite clearly hated children, and as for Wesley, he said to his mother in the very first episode: "Captain Picard is a pain, isn't he, mom?". Wesley may have also had negative feelings about Picard because he remembered that Picard was the one who brought his father's body home.

But in time, they came to respect each other, and I think that shift was very nicely done.

I do wonder how Wesley would have felt, though, if his mother had started a relationship with Picard? Did he have any inkling of what they felt for each other? Somehow I think not, but I could be convinced otherwise.

Wesley seemed cool with his mum dating other guys: he didn't even seem bothered by her having "feelings" for John in Transfigurations. Hmm strange alien with no memory and for all tey knew could be a mass murderer on his planet ... and Wes didn't seem to mind the growing affection

I think you're right about Wesley's feelnigs re Picard dating his mother though. I don't think he'd like it somehow. If you've read Q in Law, there is this GREAT part in it where Wesley in funny about Picard inviting his mother to a ball and he goes there to see what they're up to.

But that said, teenage Wesley may not be ok with it but perhaps when older he would understand. Picard was good ot him: allowed him to sere on the bridge at only 15 years old and made him a full ensign at 17. They were good together and obviously cared for each other. So maybe as Wes got older he'd be ok with his mother and picard together. He's a good man and he's good to Wesley.

Anyone reading this thread? Anyone at all? If so, here are some nice P/C avatars (amateurishly made by yours truly) for you to look at...

Can Doctor Who give us Bev on Picard's desk? No, I rather think not! :p
Now, there's a point.

You're still not a convert to New Who, are you?

Just based on the previous series and the trailers and publicity photos I didn't think that it would be to my liking. However, I will probably try an episode if they repeat it, since I've read plenty of praise for it.

We haven't yet considered the possibilities of a Picard/Lwaxana relationship, altthough there's no denying that she was interested in him. What do people think of the prospects of this rather off-beat pairing? It was the only time, I believe, that an older woman expressed an interest in Picard ...
