P/C run amok...

I can't wait till we've all read it so that we can discuss it properly. Spoiler:
There hasn't been any new P/C in years, and now...!

Me too. I actually will do an analysis after other people have had a chance to read it. I already feel badly enough posting the spoilers I have!

Well, I couldn't wait any longer...I managed to get my greedy little hands on the e-book version of Death in Winter...below is my take on the book...not too many spoliers though...but if you want to be left totally surprised move on!

Spoiler:
Being a long time P/Cer I have to admit I have mixed emotions about this novel. It was not the grand P/C love adventure I had been hoping for. The great majority of the story focuses on the Romulans and Beverly and Picard don't have much interaction. Most of the P/C storyline is from Picard's point of view, which is interesting, but lacks real emotional depth. The author even rehases scenes from old TNG episodes, which I found rather annoying at times. For those of you who really really want P/C to end up together, you'll be please with the last few paragraphs, but the ending of the novel is far too rushed and I hope the future post-Nemesis novel pick up where this story left off! BIG SPOLIER: Beverly is very much alive and well at the end of this novel, and no major characters die!

I'm definitely getting the idea that whatever may or may not happen with P/C, it doesn't make this a particularly good book. *sigh*

Spoiler:
I'm disappointed to hear about the rushed ending. It could have been predicted from the previews that P and C would have spent most of the novel apart, but it's a shame that they weren't given a little more interaction. (Still, I suppose the flashbacks count.)

Tell me: does Jack figure in any scenes besides the wedding one?

I'm not going to let the book stop me from writing my own "Picard and Crusher get together after the series" stories, because I've been thinking for a while now about how it would happen. And happen it should. :)

Sixty posts in this thread since I last looked! Wow. Not missed me too much then. :)

I'm trying to stay spoiler free of Death in Winter. I've a nasty feeling it's going to derail my fanfic.

Just in case anyone didn't know, Death in Winter is now available in e-book form here for only $10 (about £6). That's cheap enough that I'm actually considering reading the e-book now and buying it in paperback later. :o

Okay, for what it's worth here's my take (very few spoilers)
Spoiler:
I'm inclined to agree that the ending is rushed, that said I did let out a scream of joy when I read it. It just strikes me that the book overall lacks something but that could well just be a result of reading it on my computer (much more used to paper). My own initial reaction was that it lacked passion (and I don't just mean the all loved up kind). I know I'm probably wrong to do so, but I find myself comparing it to "Q-Squared" and find it comes up short in effecting me as a reader, I never really get a sense of urgency or danger. Maybe it could never live up to the building hype, afterall how long have we all been waiting for this? but it was an enjoyable read.

Oh and Naraht: Spoiler:
The wedding scene is the only one in which John Barrowman makes an appearance as Jack Crusher.

Newbie here, but some in-put/sight into the new book...

Spoiler:
For what it's worth, I believe that those of us who check out the American edition of the book (coming out ~Sept. 20) will get a teaser for the upcoming (2007?) novel "Resistence" that includes some pretty P/C heavy action. As in a scene that is set in said couple's bed/room. Those who are interested can find this through insightful use of the "Search within this book" feature on Amazon. For instance, search "Beverly" and jump ahead to the end of the book, then read those pages.

^Again... about bloody time!
Just a horrible thought...
Spoiler:
How badly would it traumatize Wesley to walk in on them?

I shall continue to la la la fingers in ears la la la if you don't mind.

A question for you. Mostly when two characters are seen having breakfast it's code for HOT SEX the night before. Why dont we think it likely in P/C's case?

Spoiler:
Hot Damn! That's some good reading.

You know what, my brain says there should be an answer for that.

An answer that makes sense.

But damned if I can think of it.

I believe that the first time that their breakfasts are mentioned or shown is in "Q-Pid", which clearly shows her arriving at his quarters from elsewhere. That establishes the parameters of their meals for future episodes.

^^^ That's a good answer. The scene in Q-Pid is crafted very carefully to make it clear where the sexual relationship lies, and it's not in the P/C direction.

Someone unfamiliar with TNG could well watch the breakfast in, say, The Chase, or the first breakfast in The Perfect Mate, and assume that those two did have a sexual relationship. Something tells me that a good portion of the Enterprise crew may think so too. :)

And if Picard and Crusher did decide to start a relationship, but wanted to keep it private for a while, it would almost be laughably easy. No one would notice anything different in their daily routines, since they spend so much time together already!

^Interesting that in "Q-pid" our good captain acted like a man embarassed over an affair. Good thing Bev's not Bree Van de Kamp...

^^^ Indeed.

It's interesting to note that Beverly reacts with the same sort of guilt in The Host. She and Odan are kissing in his quarters... Picard calls on the comm... Beverly puts her hands to her mouth and we get one very guilty look out of her! Although both of them may have had other short-term relationships, I think it's always been clear where their affections really were.
