P/C run amok...

Perhaps also because he's described as being "practically inseparable" with Jack and Keel, which is seems stronger than almost any relationship of his which is shown throughout the series.

It's tough to imagine Picard with friends let alone inseperable ones, he's not the 'call me Jean-Luc' type.

New thought for discussion:

How serious a threat was Janice Manheim to P/C?

Jenice Manheim? Meh. This whole episode went the furthest towards making Beverly into a pining, lovesick schoolgirl, who clearly believed that Jenice *did* represent an obstacle to her relationship with Picard. "I can't compete with a ghost from his past..." and all this. It doesn't really sound like our Bev.

Think about it. First, Jenice is married. (A small thing, I know, but bear with me here!) Second, Picard left her, not vice versa. Third, if my memory is correct, Picard met Beverly after he left Jenice. Jenice has been superseded, big time.

The whole episode seems sort of artificial to me, somehow. Maybe it's just the costuming...

Ah the costuming! I must admit I could never quite understand her outfit. It didn't seem entirely approriate for a woman stuck out on a resarch lab with her neglecting husband. Tough to find a screencap where she hasn't got her arms resolutely at her side. Hmm. Poor Bev looks incredibly dowdy by comparison.

He was dying but I'm bearing, I'm bearing.

Second, Picard left her, not vice versa.
All the more attractive. An unknown roguish charm.

Third, if my memory is correct, Picard met Beverly after he left Jenice. Jenice has been superseded, big time.
but he's either a) not really aware of Beverly or b) already over her if you go with the evidence in Attached.

Was there a threat to P/C? Meh, she was a rubbish actress and they had no chemistry. :D

Perhaps she decided to dress up a bit when she realised that Picard was coming? :)

Dowdy? Bev? Heresy! The only woman on TNG that can make Beverly look dowdy, in my opinion at least, is Kamala the Super-Empathic Metamorph. And you can't really expect Beverly to compete with someone that had all that training. And stylists, probably...

...already over her if you go with the evidence in Attached.
Is he? I suppose that's possible, although I've never thought about when (in that version) he was supposed to have gotten over her.

And here's the fourth unaswerable reason! You win. :)

Dowdy? Bev? Heresy!
Ok The lighting is so dull in the first season though, Bev is cursed with practically looking brunette whilst this thing, this blonde thing with teeth and an outfit made of aluminium foil floats about trying to catch Picard's eye. Just saying...

Perhaps she was only saying that get Troi to shut up? ;)

He was so not over Bev. I think though she knew he was lying, she wasn't going to call him on it when they were dependent upon each other for survival and they didn't want to get caught by the Prit while they were getting... friendly... :D

Not all men like blondes, you know. ;)

I think that anyone who wears aluminium foil is quite eyecatching. Go out into town in such an outfit and I guarantee that people will look at you ...

Picard must be over Bev by the Perfect Mate or why else would he choose to discuss his personal feelings with her about Kamala the Super-Empathic Metamorph*. If there is any chance of P/C going places, discussing KtSEM* is going to kill it isn't it? Nothing says doormat more than the guy you fancy wanting your views on some other woman.

Perhaps he was hoping to spark her into a jealous rage? ;)

More seriously, I think they were portraying them mostly as friends by this S4/S5 stage, with "The Host" another example.

The portrayal of who is interested in whom switches back and forth frequently. I agree that the overall vibe in season five was "just friends"; however the hand-holding in The Perfect Mate did seem a bit suspicious. (I mean, I don't even hold hands with my female friends, and Picard seems even more tactile-defensive than I am!)

As for The Host, I would argue that there are indications on both sides of something a little bit more than friendly feeling. Beverly seems to feel some guilt when Picard's call on the communicator interrupts her and Odan; for his part, I think there's a bit of jealousy in Picard, and some pain in his face when he hugs her.

Am I making it up? Maybe...

I got that from my parents... apparently an authentic mental-health term (or possibly used about babies, I'm not sure?), which I have now adopted for normal use. It says it all, really. :)

Beverly, on the other hand, is very tactile. I suspect that if the two of them did get together, he would get very annoyed eventually about her touching him in public.

^ Best not.

Anyway, back to my original thought. Why talk to Bev about Kamarla? And indeed start by suggesting they take off the uniforms? Ho ho. Is he completely stupid to how she's going to react to that suggestion?

I guess that if he felt the need to talk to someone about it, perhaps she's just the best option of those available, although Troi might find that to be a bit of an insult to her skills!
