Overhear anyone saying they will see Trek for the first time?

Something along these lines happened to me. My cousin is going to be in town the weekend of May 9th for a wedding he's in. I would usually be looking forward to his visit but I was already planning to catch the first available showing of ST. Imagine my surprise when he asked if we're going to see "that Star Trek movie" while he was in town. In fact he wants to catch the first showing as well... even if it's at midnight.

I am a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor and also a Muay Thai student at the same gym. I overheard two of my Muay Thai instructors commenting that they heard the new Star Trek movie was good after practice. So it is getting some mainstream buzz!!!!

Yes. While talking to one of my friends who has long laughed at Star Trek and considered it "nerd fodder", he tells me he really wants to see this movie. He's never seen an episode of Star Trek before, and until now, was never interested. His reaction to all of the trailers (I have them all in hi def) was "THIS is Star Trek?!"

J.

Same thing here! A friend I work with and knows I'm a trek fan who thinks all the space ship shows are "nerd fodder" as you put it. We went to see a movie and it showed the trek trailer and have shown the others and now really wants to see it! Another girl I work with told me she's wanting to see it also but she's a girl so I guess she can't....;) Anyway my vacation starts the 7th and a group of us are going, hopefully to the midnight show unless they don't have one...

When the last trailer played in front of a movie I went to see, some lady in front of me was surprised that it was Star Trek because she didn't like Star Trek but said the trailer looked good.

I'm pretty much the only serious Trek fan in my family, and have no friends that are Trek fans. My mom loves it, but she's not a serious fan. My cousin, who's a huge Star Wars fan and is pretty put off by Trek (though is familiar with it and enjoys TVH) is really looking forward to it, saying it looks like a much more entertaining and fresh approach. Most of my friends have said they think it'll be awesome, and my mom wants to go with us to the midnight show, which she's never done. I'd say the marketing team has done a fantastic job.

^You are. Just read the reviews from Austin, Texas. People expecting to see TWOK (hardcore TOS fans) saw the new movie. So far all the reviews are good, even from people who were NOT looking forward to the new film.

My understanding is that those people were also expecting to see a ten-minute clip of the new movie, so I'm not sure how well your argument holds up.
