Overhear anyone saying they will see Trek for the first time?

Just occurred to me at the gym tonight while discussing movies. BOTH my partners independently started talking about wanting to see the ST movie because it looked interesting.

Anyone else have this happen to them at work or in public?

Yes. While talking to one of my friends who has long laughed at Star Trek and considered it "nerd fodder", he tells me he really wants to see this movie. He's never seen an episode of Star Trek before, and until now, was never interested. His reaction to all of the trailers (I have them all in hi def) was "THIS is Star Trek?!"

Their plan is working apparently, seems to be a big draw of people to see this movie.

No. No one I talk to other than fannish friends has mentioned the movie - in fact, it's extraordinarily rare for Star Trek ever to come up in conversation (other than with fans).

I have had several non-Trekkie friends say that the movie sounds really good and they plan on checking it out.

Well my boyfriend (as a kid was taken to see Khan) but has never gone to see Trek as an adult. He is dying to see this movie and has already gotten a group of 12 friends (most who haven't watched trek) set up to go on opening night. Of course it doesn't hurt that he is paying for those tickets (but hey it all counts).

In my different groups of friends... old high school buddies, college friends, church friends, and coworkers, at least a few in each group have said they will see the movie. And no one has a negative opinion of it and this point...

seriously, that is cool, John! let's just hope he isn't disappointed.

My brother (who has ridiculed my interest in Trek for decades) offered to go see it with me AND BUY THE TICKETS! If we were Catholic I'd be calling the Vatican about this miracle!

I'm going with several co-workers, some who have never seen Star Trek, to the midnight showing opening day. They're going because it sounds like fun and want to be in the group---and they'll get to see a really good movie.

I think we can agree on that for everyone here! :D
Yeah, I hope this will be a boon for Star Trek and fans of good movies in general.

I know a lot of people (some Trek fans, most not) that are very excited about this movie.

The movie may or may not be any good, but the trailers are definitely doing their job well.

Yes. A couple of times. It's encouraging. It makes me think this will be as good a movie as it's being hyped to be.

I showed trailer 3 to my wife who usually rolls here eyes when I mention Trek. Her response was, "Wow. I guess I'll have to see that one." High praise from her.

There's another non-Trek-related site I frequent. Someone posted a poll about which summer movie people were most looking forward to. Trek is still at the top by a long stretch.

Ya know I have to laugh at your friend there...I mean he/she can judge that it's fodder for nerds yet has never viewed an episode from any series huh??? Maybe they should take a gander before making judgements....is the only thing selling your friend on the movie is the special effects? Eeeee gad I'm afraid it's just going to be "another one of those movies"...big wanna be blockbuster with little substance...HOPE i'm wrong!

^You are. Just read the reviews from Austin, Texas. People expecting to see TWOK (hardcore TOS fans) saw the new movie. So far all the reviews are good, even from people who were NOT looking forward to the new film.
