overated SCIFI movies

Can you think of some SCIFI movies that your friends, and maybe the rest of the world, consider classic, or great at least, and you just think...ehhh..overated!!!

Rob

Yes: 2001: A Space Odyssey. It is one of the most boring, awfully paced films I have ever seen.

My two real good friends have been fighting over this movie for going on twenty-years now. It almost came to blows when it came up again about a year ago. I dont think I know of another SCIFI movie (besides Star Trek Nemesis) that can bring people to near barbaric responses...

as for me? I think it is overated, but still a very good film for its time. The effects, and all that, were ground breaking...but I'm with you on this one.

Matrix... not one-millionth as philosophically interesting or profound as many seem to think it was IMHO, and I think Keanu is simply pathetic. I famously watched it a 2nd time on DVD before the 2nd one came out and disliked it even more than the first time.. and talked my friends out of going to see the 2nd one.

You know, I'm almost with you on this one since, I think, it kind of steps on DARK CITY's toes a little. I am wondering, Klaus, what did you think of Dark City, or how do you view them both side by side?

Rob

2001 is a classic, and I understand why. Kubrick was a masterful director, and the subject matter, tone and especially the effects work and production design were revolutionary. It deserves all the accolades it gets and will always be a classic.

Yet it does nothing for me. Boring as fuck. 4th here.

I think you need to be in the right frame of mind to appreciate 2001.

Yeah, watching it on tv on a small screen, with commercial interruptions and the kids arguing in the background, it's not exactly a compelling narrative.

But in a darkened theater, on a big screen, where you can just settle back and bask in the cosmic scope of it all, 2001 can be a mind-blowing experience. Its rewards are not those of ordinary fiction: sympathetic characters, funny dialogue, exciting action. It's all about awe and sense of wonder.

It's not a story about people. It's about grand vistas of time and space and evolution. It's more of a symphony than a story.

BUCKAROO BANZAII, on the other hand, is waaay over-rated. :)

Very well put.

There are many overrated sci-fi movies. In fact, there's a whole forum dedicated to one on this very board. However, 2001 isn't one of them.

Blade Runner, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai, and the original The Day The Earth Stood Still.

No thanks, friendo.

I saw this thread earlier and was afraid someone would mention The Matrix. I'm of the opposite opinion. I think it's one of the most profound movies ever to come out since it touches on some of the most fundamental issues that mankind has been grappling throughout recorded history. Sure its got the action, the explosions and the cool fx, but that doesn't diminish the fact that it has a message as well, and a pretty big one at that.

I hear a lot about Dark City whenever The Matrix comes up and I still haven't seen it.

Every science fiction film made that people compare to 2001 I love. Films that in my mind do exactly what you're describing here, I love. The type of thing you've written is something I would normally type to describe other science fiction films that I love.

But 2001 does nothing for me. I don't know why. It's something psychological I'm sure, something in it's construction that doesn't jive with me, or something in my cultural subconscious that turns me off from it. *shrug*

2001: A Space Odyssey and Blade Runner top my list. Both have some merit, but neither is as great as their reputation.

Yeah..Im with you on Blade Runner too...my friend who HATES 2001 loves Blade Runner...

I think THE ABYSS, movie version, was over-rated. I thought the directors cut was far better...far far better...
