Over-representation of Americans

yes, but as they should be. It's impossible to represent everyone and being selective would only foster unnecessary resentment by those who weren't represented. Just because you have a French Picard doesn't been you're representing Slovakians, for instance. While Americans represent the whole world even today, to some extend.

What? In what way do Americans represent the whole world? They're a small fraction of human civilization that much of the rest of the world hates. That comment makes no sense.

They do, because Americans are assimilated people from all over the world, so anyone can relate to an American character, it's why American entertainment is so popular everywhere in the world. What is it that doesn't make sense to you?

Wow. That is so incredibly arrogant, I can only assume you are trying to troll me. If not then I am in no mind to try to argue such stupidity.
And this is potentially warnable for two counts of flaming and one of publicly accusing a member of trolling. (Use the Report function and leave it to the mods if you think someone is.) I'd advise not doing this again.

I can't help but think much of the world would disagree

Apologies, I'm new to the forum, I'll use the report function next time.

Well, that's my opinion. In any case, representing every nation in the world would serve no purpose and would be impossible to do. Today people still harbor negative feelings towards people of other nationalities due to wars, conflicts, sports even, etc. Americans of the far future are pretty neutral because anyone can become an American, while you don't really become a "Frenchman" even if you move there.

I'll rest my case at this, since Mattadd is getting too upset over this.

I thought Crusher was Scottish based on the whole Scottish castle episode, but I stand corrected then.

He means that America's population consists of all nationalities. America doesn't have an ethnic identity or ethnic heritage the way many other nations do.

To be perfectly honest it's not hard to see why.....

As a Dutch person, I'm going to now wait for all the cliches about Amsterdam. :D :D :D
When I think about the Dutch/Amsterdam, I'm reminded of two things:

1. One of the Peter Davison Doctor Who stories was shot there and featured both the return of Omega and Tegan rejoining the Doctor and Nyssa in the TARDIS.

2. There's an episode of Carl Sagan's Cosmos series that talks about the Dutch merchants and scientists in the 17th and 18th centuries, specifically Christiaan Huygens.

iirc Wesley was born on a starship, and his mother was born on Earth's moon.

Sounds like Troi's father was a American (from Fist Full of Data's), so Troi might be American.
So where did Troi's goofy accent come from? I have a very hard time believing she got it from her father, and Lwaxana doesn't have it. None of the other Betazoid characters have it.

Belanna Torres on her father's side (maybe Latin America).

Michael Eddington (DS9) might be assumed to be Canadian.
Could someone please remind me why Eddington would be assumed to be Canadian? It's been a very long time since I've seen any DS9 episodes.

Eddington carries a lucky loonie. It's a cultural thing in Canada, Olympic icemakers, who are usually Canadian, bury a loonie under centre ice for good luck for the Canadian hockey team. I'm sure things have evolved quite a bit by Eddington's time but he still calls it a lucky loonie.

Ah, okay. Thanks for the reminder.

I remember the first time they buried a loonie at center ice (I'm Canadian and prefer to watch Olympic hockey rather than NHL since they're not allowed to fight so much). It worked (not that our teams need much of a luck booster to medal), so they kept the tradition going.

Time sure flies... it's been 30 years now since the loonie was introduced.

I'm still not replying to the idiotic and highly offensive notion that Americans can represent everyone no matter how many Americans see themselves that way.
You're entitled to disagree with the notion, but please dial down the outrage a bit. Better to disagree without being disagreeable.

Thanks.

No I know that and I said that in my OP. I also said to set aside the IRL reasons and speculate on in-universe reasons.
In universe reason, the show is a spotlight on a tiny area of the Federation. On other Starfleet vessels either most of the crew are nonAmerican humans or most of the crew are not human at all. Plus TOS has a crew of 400, show concentrates on mainly three of them, TNG has a crew of 1000, the show concentrates on about seven of them, DS9 is a space station where most of the residents are not even human but you would never know that by watching the show.
If some fans are assuming the rest of the world has disappeared or had some kind of drastic population reduction because most of the human crew seen on screen are from North America, well what can I say but that is being culturally arrogant. Might as well assume the Federation is just Earth and a few Vulcan residents based on TOS screen time.
As for Enterprise, the rest of the world probably decided it was worth sacrificing the North Americans to be the human guinea pigs for space travel. If it all went pear shape the Earth Senators/MPs, can blame the North American alliance lol

I watched a 1980's show called Dallas, based on what I saw all of the Dallas residents must be rich, white oil men, right?

This is why I prefer the Star Trek novelverse, the worldbuilding is better.

I guess you do not own a passport

How do you know what Americans or French people of the future are going to be like?

I would hope by then were are all finally just Terrans..........when you are so focused on race you will never see past it.
So a Star Trek show that had most of the human crew from China, Pakistan or Africa would sell to an American audience right?

I'm Canadian and there are a lot of American characters in TV shows and movies that I can't relate to.
