That is one really strange looking Transporter Room...

Shades of the TMP rig there, with the exposed underfloor machinery.

Do those walls move when Spock beams in?

What I'm reminded of is the "utilitarian" transporter room set alteration used in "Dagger of the Mind" for beaming some cargo and a stowaway. That operation, too, resulted in the transportee being placed somewhere relatively far away from the bridge, indeed on one of the lower decks (Deck 14 is mentioned, and the DSC ship, even if perhaps bigger, has the same porthole rows and thus probably deck count as the TOS one). Plenty of room for a roller coaster turboride there.

Peck really manages to look like Quinto here... Which I think is a good thing, just like Romjin managing to look quite unlike Hudec-Barrett-Roddenberry.

Well, Starbase 40 is likely one of the older ones, and I wonder about the attitudes towards personnel transporter hardware safety back then.

Same floor from the S31 ship, or not? Looks like they just put walls around something they've used before.
