Many Trek fans, myself absolutely included, love chatting about which legacy characters they’d love to see return — especially now that we’ve got a show set just past the TNG/DS9/VOY-era. We’ve been treated to tons of Seven, and we’ve caught up with Riker, Troi, Hugh, and... um... we certainly caught a few choice camera angles of Icheb, too!
But thinking about characters with major roles in the various shows whose actors can feasibly return, are there names who stand out to you as feeling decidedly apathetic toward (or even worse)? Characters who, for you, dragged things down in their shows and just aren’t welcome back?
For me, that character is Chakotay. Not that Beltran is remotely likely to ever express interest in revisiting the role, anyway, but I’ve literally taken part in multiple “Rank every major Star Trek character” projects through the years and repeatedly ranked Chakotay last. Whenever I rewatch Voyager, I start off wanting to like him, but as his material is mostly poor (IMO) and then gradually nonexistent, and as Beltran’s growing disinterest becomes clearer and clearer, I end up sighing whenever the poor guy gets lines.
My favorite thing about Seven’s return is that not only do the writers make it obvious that her romance with Chakotay probably fell apart, they aren’t even interested in offering a throwaway line about it. They knew I don’t care. They knew all I wanted from that situation was confirmation that it went nowhere. The writers heard me from thousands of kilometers away. Bless them.
What about you? I imagine popular choices include Neelix, Wesley... poor Mayweather, too.
