Looks damn impressive. I'm sure it will be a divisive choice, but I'm glad to see Squeenix moving away from the ATB system to a real-time (ish?) system.

I have never played japanese RPGs like FF but a friend does so i have seen some of it live and the combat system always seemed like a relic from very old consoles that couldn't handle a live action oriented combat system.

Will be fun to watch the reactions of purists though but it sure looks very nice. FFVII is the one with the tearjerker ending that always pops up in all TopX Most emotional Games lists?

Square-Enix has announced that it's going to have an episodic nature, with something like FF7R-1, FF7R-2, and so on. They say it's becaue of how much data the game would take up -- but I figure it's so that they can start getting it released and start earning profit back instead of having a six year development cycle.

^ It's so the episodes total price adds up to more than 60 bucks. Milking it for every last dollar.

I'm not sure those cartoony character designs translated well to the more realistic graphics of the PS4. Cloud especially looks pretty silly.

This is the biggest game that the company has ever released, so I can't blame them for milking it a bit. I'll just wait until all the episodes are out and buy the bundle.

Yeah, this was the problem they had with Final Fantasy XIII and what is now Final Fantasy XV.

They'll most certainly not want a repeat of that mess.

Plus Final Fantasy VIII isn't a small game. It had a ton of locations and other assets (most of which were static 2D maps). Making high quality 3D maps and models of all of them isn't going to be a quick job. Just watch the first trailer showing off a more realistic and alive Midgard.

Also there's the 2017 release date, which I strongly suspect they realised they aren't going to make. Given it's the 20th anniversary, they probably want to hit that date for maximum marketing potential.

Well, turn-based combat is a more "authentic" RPG fighting system that is integral to tabletop role-playing games.

Even before the Final Fantasy series, there were RPG video games such as Dragon Slayer that featured hack-and-slash combat. And of course, the Legend of Zelda had real-time fighting.

The technical capabilities were there already. So I think it was a deliberate choice for Final Fantasy to have turn-based battles with multiple characters, as a reflection of the way "real" role-playing games worked.

For me the draw of turn based combat systems is that you have full control of multiple characters which allows for greater strategic control and complexity. That's the tradeoff of making it real time as well, that you lose that control so you have to rely on automated behavior and (Usually poor) AI.

Also the reason I find Xenoblade unplayable. In FFXII and FFXIII at least you have the power to stop and make the other characters behave the way you want. In Xenoblade you're totally at the mercy of AI for all but one character. When you don't have that control, it really does feel like a relic of weaker systems.

I love tactical RPGs like Final Fantasy Tactics, Disgaea or Growlanser where you have such deep strategic variety you can design any number of novel strategies for any fight.

I'll give FFVIIR a chance but I don't have high expectations. Then again I never was that huge a fan of FFVII.

For me the choice between action games and turn based RPGs is like the choice between playing basketball and playing chess. Both are fun, in different ways. But playing an RPG where you can only control one character, AND all you can do with that character is select options from a menu is the most dull experience imaginable.

As long as Tifa is outfitted the way she was in the original, and not like Advent Children, I'll be happy.
Squeenix already fucked up Lara Croft.

I'm guessing the end of part one will be leaving Midgard. It's a huge area, arguably bigger than the rest of the first continent when it's towns/dungeons are put together.

Also Midgard is probably going to be the busiest and most complex of the maps to do.

As long as Tifa is outfitted the way she was in the original,

Agreed. Also, forgetting for a second I'm a heterosexual male, the design nicely contrasted with Aerith's and played with the sterotypes.

You could make quite a few assumptions about Tifa and Aerith based on their outfits and you'd be way off.

I have to think part one would be longer than Midgard. It was arguably the most memorable part of the game but you were out of there in five hours. They'd have to add a lot to Midgard to make that work. Flesh out both the under and the over and have a whole terrorist plotline before Shinra knocks down the pillar.
