Other Ezris?

I was wondering, who else might you on this forum have placed as Ezri? Which other actresses at the time would you have preferred in the role? Blonde, perhaps?

I liked Nicole DeBoer, but would have personally preferred Ezri not to become a main character in the final season. DS9 was already +1 since Worf came aboard anyway, not to mention the healthy number of secondary characters. Limiting Ezri's appearance to a single episode (as a guest star) would have compressed all her and Worf's issues and probably given us a good episode without interfering with the Dominion War arc.

It may also have been interesting to cast a male character in the role.

Oh, I completely disagree. We needed some kind of resolution that would've been believeable. And it enhanced the DW arc--by giving many elements (the Breen alliance, Damar's rebellion, etc.) a more personal angle....

And...nah--Nicole was IDEAL for the role. She nailed it, for me. End of story.

I would have like to see a male Dax for one episode but I was quite happy with Ezri and Nicole.

I agree. Nicole + Ezri fans unite!

There was nothing wrong with the acting performance of the Ezri actress they chose, she did as well as could be expected.

No other actress could have made Ezri any more worthwhile.

The problem with Ezri is that she was 100% useless character with no relevance whatsoever to the plot of the show, and shoehorned into the show for no reason other than because she is a woman (which is a really bad reason to add a character a show).

Then again, all that is also equally true of Jadzia, and they certainly could have chosen a better actress for the Jadzia role.

The problem with Ezri is 100% on a writing level and 0% on an acting level.

It may also have been interesting to cast a male character in the role.

I completely disagree. The male/female ratio in the show was already too high. Making Kira the only main female character while adding yet another male character would have been really too much.

Agreed.

Really? The male/female ratio in any tv show never really bothered me. It was whether the character was interesting and had depth that mattered. What if the Trill were genderless or had more than two genders?

If gender doesn't matter, why don't we have 6 or 7 women in the main cast and 2 men, rather than the other way round? Or can only male characters be interesting and have depth? :shifty:

Yes! Another vote for Nicole de Boer being perfect for the role.

Reminds me of a friend's RP ship where most of the department heads are women.

"Gender ratio" should never be a consideration as to whether to put a character on the show or not. A character should be put on the show when he/she serves a useful purpose to the show, regardless of gender. Adding useless characters as a gender-based affirmative action to improve the "gender ratio" only serves to drag the show down by wasting screen-time on useless characters, which both Daxes are on the DS9 show.

Sure, 6 of 7 women and 2 men would be fine if all the women are interesting and have the depth and acting prowess of say, Louise Fletcher's Winn character.

The problem however is that most often showrunners simply as aforementioned, add women for no good reason, instead of because they are good characters or good actresses. They seem to think that simply by virtue of having put a woman on the show, that makes the character worthwhile by default. But really, nothing could be further from the truth.

Look, all this talk about Dax (both of them) being useless is quite absurd.

I...guess a case could possibly be made for this IF this were a plot-driven show.

However...DS9 is, by and large, a character driven show--the wants and needs and journeys of the characters being the FOCUS of the show.

Look. If we're gonna talk about necessity...then, in theory, Jake and Nog were unnecessary--as were, by this argument, Kassidy Yates, Tora Zyal, Leeta, Rom, Keiko (and while we're at it, Miles O'Brien), Quark, and so on....

So...how do you define "unnecesary"--or "useless"?

Ezri had a story arc just like the other characters.

Since we're here talking about a specific character and whether it would have been better if that character were male, this "it's not about gender, it's about how interesting and deep the character is" talk makes no sense in the context. Unless people who are using that argument are implying that the character would have been better, more interesting and deeper just by virtue of being male. Or, in other words, women are shallower, less interesting and generally lame just for being women. :shifty:

Sorry, but that's the only logical interpretation of crouteru's and Navaros' arguments above.

Wha? My point about Dax's new host being a male stems from a similar situation seen at the end of TNG's 'The Host', where Dr Crusher's Trill lover (I forget his name) changes host into a female body.

If Dax was put into a male host, the issue of love transending gender could have been explored between Worf and Dax. I suppose this was already covered in 'Rejoined' though.

My point is about the acceptance of homosexuality in society. I don't really know why you got the impression my comments were about women being less interesting. A new Star Trek series could have an all female cast if it wanted, so long as the characters are interesting.

I'd have brought Dax back joined with Wesley Crusher-- whose "Traveler" abilities allowed him to weather the transition.

Oh yeah, I went there.

There's a common excuse in various fandoms which basically claims that reason why female characters get bashed and ignored is because they aren't as "deep and interesting" as the male characters. I suspect that DevilEyes might be conversant with it and deduced that you were using it.

As for the record I obviously can't invisage anybody but Nicole de Boer in the role.

That's because a lot of RP players are women from what I've learned. I've been playing in the one in my signature for 9 years and we've had more female players than men over the years. At one point I think I was the only male player.

Now we're pretty balanced.
