^^ Most people disagree, Overgeeked, and Academy members are people too.
That said, it's unlikely that the film will get anything along the lines of cinematography or costume design etc. These categories are often cluttered by period films. One thing is guaranteed, I'll say it again, and that's sound editing. I don't know if there's any big war movie coming out this year, or what James Cameron has up his sleeve with Avatar, but for that, there's even a chance of a win.
You know, with any category at the Oscars, it's all about "the buzz". Films that were big throughout the year, i.e. well-reviewed, good box office, etc, tend to be remembered at year's end when the different branches have to nominate what they thought was best. Films that were bombs tend not to do well even in the technical fields because voters don't feel like voting for a film they hated, even if it was technically brilliant. This is how Transformers lost all its three nominations two years ago. OTOH, films people liked get a bonus. This is how The Bourne Ultimatum won three Oscars that same year, including the important film editing category and besting Transformers in two sound categories. In an outside chance, Star Trek could do the same. That is, if people remember the film well and the good reception extends to these people as well.
Look at past Treks at the Oscars:
1979 TMP 3 nominations (art direction, score, visual FX)
1986 TVH 4 nominations (cinematography, score, sound, sound effects editing)
1991 TUC 2 nominations (makeup, sound effects editing)
1996 FC 1 nomination (makeup)
All of these were the ST films that were well-received and/or successful at the box office. TMP, after all, was one of the highest-grossing films of 1979. People remember that.
