Oscar, I presume?

Does anyone think an Oscar could be on the cards?

The special effects and score were pretty marvellous... anything else?

For special effects or sound esign or whtnot, but nothing else.

Not that I didn't love the hell out of this movie...but talking about Oscars for it in any other way looks embarrassing.

Only in yer wildest dreams...

ET was 100 times better than Trek XI and it didn't win best picture that year (1982-83).

Aside from rarities, I don't think the Academy likes Sci-Fi.
I would love to see Trek XI get an Oscar for a lot of things, but I doubt it will happen.

Who knows though. It's possible!

If there was a category for best science fiction film, it would have a chance at best movie. The music, costuming, and FX were all great and have a chance.

Indeed. It IS sci-fi. How friendly has the Academy been to other movies of that genera anyway?

While not an academy member.... I doubt ST will be remembered by those who are.

It was a great Trek film not a great film. No oscars.

For me, I think its the opposite with regards to the plot.
But yeah, I know what you mean. Stereotypical sci-fi action movie will get ignored, but this isnt any typical sci-fi film. Trust me, I havent seen SPX this good ever and it is one of the reasons why everyone lives this film. It should at least be nominated.

Check out the nominees over the previous 3 yrs:
2006: Poseidon, Super Returns and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Mans Chest (Won)
2007: The Golden Compass (won), Transformers, Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End
2008: The Dark Knight, Iron Man and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Definitely, Star Trek will be nominated.

Remember, even The Dark Knight got stiffed for Best Picture (it wasn't even nominated). I suspect that if Star Trek gets any BP Oscar love, it will be less about the merits of the movie itself than about kissing J.J. Abrams's @$$.

Watchmen had a lot of better special effects. Transformers 2 a Spielberg film which is a Industrial Light and Magic production is coming, Wolverine, Harry Potter; a previous winner, as a whole lot of other sci-fi, action, and horror films for the rest of the year. Star Trek has never won any Oscars to my knowledge this will be no different. Its a great film that may win a World-con Hugo award.

10 nominations, no wins.

It will HAVE to win sound editing and visual effects this time around though.

It's not unlikely. Nominations at least. Some Oscarologists (yes, that's what they call themselves) predicted some two or three nominations for Star Trek way back in February already. If the film does as well with the audience as it does with the critics, people will remember it at the end of the year and noms for sound editing (a sure thing, I'd say), maybe sound mixing (which Iron Man failed to get last year) and visual FX could be in there. Forget about Best Picture, Directing, Screenplay, Acting, that sort of thing. No way. Winning any of these categories mentioned above will also be difficult.

But they would be the first nominations for Star Trek since 1996!
