I mean there were bits I liked, but many I didn't.

I couldn't decide if it was written so ham fisted because the writer was bad, or if he though the message is so important he would hit pause on the episode to takes us to a special message on climate change or if it was to troll the internet anti "woke" haters.

Good in parts, mainly the Drex, which were an impressive, if unoriginal-looking baddie.

Even more unoriginal than you would think - mutated monsters in a ruined russian landscape?

Another "woke" episode, huh? How many viewers will be driven away from Doctor Who this time?

I guess the question is should we ignore climate change? Asking for a few billion friends? It was so heavy handed I'm surprised it didn't smash through the bottom of my telly but the notion that the message itself is somehow invalid or something the show shouldn't address is odd given Who has always had something of a political element.

Late 21st century... Trains planes and automobiles (and boats and space rockets) are replaced by T-Mat.

The Martian attempt at Aresforming Earth, lasted less than a week, but it was fricking global. All the good efforts from abandoning internal combustion, was zeroed out by the Martians trying to push most of the air we have out into space while flexing our magnetic fields.

That may have taken decades to auto correct, before the Daleks showed up.

I have not seen this much discussed, but it was mentioned in the episode that what was typical for orphan planets was that the elite got themselves off the wrecked and desolate planet and left the rest of the population to die. There are stories in the media about the elite building underground structures to get them through the bad times which are a'coming.

There was a brief mention as well to not being exposed to direct sunlight, as it could be fatal, which led me to think this event is occurring sometime after the solar flares ravaged Earth, which, IIRC, happened in the 27th century. (I was not sure to believe what the Doctor said about an alternate Earth on a separate timeline.)

I too thought this had more of a Classic Who feel to it - I could see this being a Third or Fourth Doctor four-part serial. That would have given all the characters time to breathe (that many Tardis regulars plus that many ancillaries is far too many for an hour show), made all the corridor-running less obvious, and made the message land somewhat less anviliciously. I have no problem with the general message, but it was let's call it less than subtle.

.

Who's the script editor? Were they asleep when they reviewed the script? It wasn't the worst episode of nuWho though, not by a long way - even with the unlikely and contrived setup, canon violation and the annoyingly clumsy and clunky delivery of the environmental message. I gave it 5/10.

Overnights 4.19million. Ouch! (Not quite Capaldi territory but they are dropping and Iplayer will only pick up so much)

I have family and friends in Australia so don't need to be convinced on climate change but lecturing people, to an almost fourth-wall breaking degree, isn't going to persuade anyone on anything but will reinforce their prejudices against smug sanctimonious liberals.

Starship UK. Amy Pond's first trip into space. :)

1st Doctor Story The Ark The odd thing about that exodus is that there's dialogue to suggest that they left Earth over a million years earlier. So, no FTL.

Third Doctor story set in the 30th century, the Mutants, had humans making colonies, becuase Earth's environment was very broken.

Meanwhile the 8th Doctor was there at the end of the world, 5 million years upstream. Earth had been botoxed and facelifted to stay unchangingly close to something that Rose could recognize. Preservationists, more than environmentalists, it's fake behavior to match expected norms means that like veal, old Earth couldn't survive in the wild, and fell into the sun the second that Satellite 5 turned off the force fields keeping it static the moment that the preservationists ran out of money.

Wow. Another bad episode of Doctor Woke. In another thread, someone posted an article about Chibnall not reading reviews. Given the lack of a course correction so far this season, I believe him.

We have seen plenty of times where they went to the future of Earth and it was nothing like that. So to basically ignore past episodes just for some more SJW garbage is simply dumb. I think I'm going to give it until the end of this season, and then just stop until Jodie and Chibnall are gone. It really is a crime what they have done to this great show.

Enough with the 'Woke' and 'SJW' bullshit. I've yet to find anyone using those terms that didn't have an asshole agenda.

Yes, it was a clumsy, patronising, preachy crapfest of an episode, pretty much everyone agrees. It certainly doesn't need a layer of internet douchebaggery applied on top.

Given the Doctor had just seen Gallifrey destroyed, a more cynical commentary would have been more appropriate. So what if the Earth has been wrecked, the rich got off, the human race survived and thrived, came back and built a holiday resort in the ashes. It's what humans do, they're like the galaxy's rats and cockroaches. They survive while nothing else does.

Ravalox, from the Mysterious planet.

Part one of the trial of a Time Lord.

fragged Earth, overgrown with trees above the London Underground.

Also the Time Lords towed Earth to a different corner of the galaxy, so that it would seem like it's not earth, becuase "Earth" was central to a Time Lord Scheme.

If you can show me a consistent timeline for Earth in the Whoniverse I'd love to see it. I mean it's not going to be long till the Daleks invade...

I liked this episode more than most. No, it's far from perfect. Heavy handed at points. But, it was entertaining. There was some tense drama. The trek across the surface and then through the underground was well done. (Although the visible forest and fires undid some of the illusion of being in a low oxygen wasteland.) Parts of the cheesiness early on gave it an 80s vibe. It was an OK episode. One that left me feeling entertained at the end.

The climate change message was heavy handed. But, holy cow, it is true. There is a vast scientific consensus that catastrophe is on its way. In a way, the scientists were wrong. Climate change is happening but scientists have underestimated its dangers. The worst case predictions of several years ago are now the median predictions of today. The consequences are appearing earlier and worse than predicted. If anything deserves a heavy handed message, it's that!

And that's how a lot of people feel about SJWs and wokeness. This show has declined immeasurably since they hired Chibnall and Whitaker.

A bit heavy-handed, although given the climate change debate it may be required at this point. Because most governments aren't doing enough.
I've been thinking about this episode and maybe the times are right for a heavy-handed message. TOS had some heavy-handed ones and I remember them making me think as a kid and there is so much noise maybe it's OK to have something like this.

It seems to me like some of the problems people have isn't even that they don't agree with the message they just don't want to have to make sacrifices and have people tell them what to do. "What, use less water, fuck that, you do that first.". I've seen whataboutism on other forums, "How big of a carbon footprint does this show have? What did they burn doing travel for location shooting?". So I don't know, maybe bring in the sledgehammer, and at least the issue is brought up even if tangentially when discussing it? I don't even know anymore...
