When David Gerrold was drafting/writing The Trouble with Tribbles, originally it was a competition between two rival Federation companies/corporations as to who could best develop Sherman's Planet and obtain control of the planet.
Which (iirc) is what lead to the poisoning of the grain.
Personally I think that sounds interesting and different. However, word came down from Roddenberry that the conflict could not be between companies, it had to be between governments, at which point the Klingons entered the picture.
The original form would have been a interesting look into the economic of the Federation, the mechanism of colonization and would have included subjects like 23rd century corporate competition, espionage and industrial sabotage.
The original form might have changed the direction of future episodes and series. Placing some of the "grit" into TOS and TNG that some fans insist is missing. Combined with Journey to Babel and Mudd's Women, drawing the Federation as a more contentious place, making the Federation more "real."
Many of us absolutely love Tribbles in it finished form, but would Tribbles in it's original form have been "better."
