Original TOS on HD-DVD?

Let's jump to the future to a time where DVD has been replaced by HD-DVD. Do you think Star Trek will be available in it's original form, or only in the remastered form? I ask, because I dislike the remastered version of the show. They've gone and butchered a classic.

I would imagine only the HD versions will be available. Which is essentially why they are doing the remastered versions in the first place.

That and for HD-TV.

One of the classic trek moments of all time, that 'winking out' of the planet with the star going nova from All Our Yesterdays, was ruined in the new version.

Haven't we gone through this dozens of times before.

My answer to the OP is yes, the original without the new effects will be available in HD, they are cleaning up the entire episodes as-is in addition to the remastered, they just found that the 16mm effects shots just don't clean up very well and thus are creating the new effects shots. One may have to pay extra to get a set with the original effects, but it will be available, CBS wants your money:devil:.

And before somebody asks , of course the scenes and minutes cut for commercials will be restored to the DVD's .

Obviously I haven't, evidenced by my starting this thread.

If they were smart, they would just put put both versions of the episode on DVD. You go buy your three Star Trek Remastered season sets on HD-DVD. You put Season 1, Disc 1 in your HD-DVD play. You select the first episode from the main menu. You then have the option to select "Original Edition" or "Special Edition." After selecting one or the other, you then have access to the episode menu with play, scene selection, commentary, languages, audio settings, and so on.

I have The Abyss Special Edition on DVD. It includes both theatrical and extended editions on Disc 1 with special features on Disc 2. :)

Well, first I must disagree with the assertion that TOS-R has "butchered" anything. Most of the new special effects are pretty much the same as the original, and some of them are better. CBS-D is (thankfully) taking a fairly conservative, very respectful approach to their work. Also, the new digital transfers of the original film are beautiful, and the colors look more like I remember my old film clips looking like than ever.

To answer the OP's question, I would bet that if the Remastered version sells well, there's no way that CBS won't also sell the original versions at a later date. (But I won't wait. I'm getting TOS-R on HD-DVD as soon as it comes out.)

According to the rumor mill...

Look for a Blu-Ray release this fall of one TOS/R season (IE, this last years' airings), with a 'dual version' of each episode.

Remember, though, rumor mill.

let me clear all this up...a lot of what has been said above is wrong

In November or December the first season of Star Trek The Original series will be released on Combo DVD/HD-DVD. They will be fully digitally remastered, uncut, in 4:3 ratio, and include the new CGI effects.
This is not rumor or speculation, but what has been in the official press release and been told to me.

what is unknown is: if/when on Blu-Ray, special features, exact release date, release dates for Seasons 2 and 3, if/when a version without new CGI will be released, if/when a version in 16:9 will be released, if they will replace some of the effects in the first produced episodes with the improved enterprise model (first used in Trouble with Tribbles)

I think this info should be put into the FAQ because the question and speculation continues.

How could they make the episodes widescreen? Wouldn't they have to cut off the top and bottom of the picture?

CGI, widescreen, all of this is nonsense to me. I'm fine with it, so long as the ORIGINAL version of the show continues to be available. :)

they have created all the new effects in 16:9 HD. If they wanted to they could create a widescreen version of the show by cropping the life action. They could also create something in between !6:9 and 4:3 which has been done on other shows.

...but for now you will get 4:3 'pillar boxing'...which means that the extra parts of the new CGI are what get cropped. That being said, if you have an XBOX 360 you can download HD versions of TOSR and see the widescreen effects mixed in with the 4:3 live action. CBS say this is actually a mistake that wont be repeated on the DVDs, but it is kind of cool, but also kind of strange that the image keeps flipping from full screen to cropped whenever they go from space shots and matte paintings to live action.

Well said ...

The only way I'd ever buy TOS again on HD-DVD is when they are in their original form, without any new FX. And I hope there will be a seperate box set of those available, I really don't want to pay for the new versions when I'm never going to watch them anyway.

And I really hope that this time the episodes will be released in production order! I've recently been watching TOS again, and the need to constantly change the discs for the next episode annoyed the hell out of me!

Jeez, I hope they don't create a fake 16 x 9 widescreen by cropping the top and bottom. I like the new EFX, and I'm planning to buy TOS-R on BluRay or HD DVD, but NOT if they crop the episodes.

I have a quick question/comment. From what I understand, the current TOS DVDs have Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 sound mixes available. Wasn't the original series recorded in mono? I just found it odd that I've never heard anyone complain about that (although maybe I've just missed this discussion repeatedly).

Not that I care personally, because I'd much rather be blasting out DD 5.1 than mono, but so many people hold up the currect DVDs as a pure and unadulterated form of TOS that I find it strange they didn't boycott the DVDs for that reason.

I've often wondered that myself. Technically, they shouldnt have DVD's at all. They should only really get to watch it when re-runs are aired by the local TV station.

Then they'll have to wait till next week. :D

Improving the medium or the equipment on which a tv show is being presented doesn't change the show itself. Adding new special effects does.

Another example: To put an old album from the fourties onto cd doesn't change the musical content. Adding an electric guitar does!

Well, it does, because the superior equipment permits you to see details you were never intended to see, such as the join where Nimoy's latex ear tips meet his skin, and the graininess of the 60s SPFX footage.

People could always switch their dvd players, tv sets or whatever to mono mode if they like.

That doesn't recreate the original sound mix, it just takes the new sound and compresses it into mono. By having an original mono track, they could keep the old sound mix with the correct music placement and correct sound effects. WB just did this with Superman and it's great to have that option.

The restruck Trek prints seen today are a botch with the sounds effects and music errors.
