Yup the new CGI and hi-def really made a difference. It revived a lot of interest in TOS for awhile and probably directly led to the JJ version of Star Trek. They are the only version I consider when thinking of TOS.

Yeah and it's kind of cool to see actually klingon ships in the episodes before they had the D7 model to use.
It always amuses me when fans complain (not meaning you) about studios taking multiple trips to the DVD well - because the copyright owners should be allowed to refresh and improve their products. Sometimes it's just new, trendier cover art; sometimes it's newly found old footage, or enhancement by processes not available or cost-effective for previous releases, or new commentary tracks by people not interested or available the first time.
The stores do not want old, dusty stock cluttering their shelves. They want new, fresh material that flies in and flies out. Double, triple and quadruple dipping is perfectly valid, and people can always sell off their older versions (which sometimes have become "rare" and worth something as a collectible anyway).
If I recall, what eventually became the JJ revival movie had already commenced negotiations, and the new CGIing of TOS was part of CBS's plans to help Paramount get some fresh, new publicity generated for the TOS era (and the whole ST franchise), which had totally slipped off many fans' radars after the premiere night of ENT.
I'm one of those complaining fans. It's not about whether or not the copyright holders have the right to re-release - of course they do. It's about fleecing fans in most cases. Because in most cases they deliberately hold back so they can re-sell it when the sequel comes out and so on. They rarely discover new footage.
As an example when Casino Royale was first released on DVD the director mentioned he had already recorded a commentary. When the interviewer asked why it was not on the DVD he said "they always hold back on these things". It was of course included in the subsequent special edition just two years later. So it's a frustratingly contrived double dip.
The defense is that I don't have to buy it again - that no one is making me. That too is understood and uncontested, like the "rights" argument. But I bought it the first time because I'm a fan. And a fan can't help but feel taken advantage of.
I think a reasonable excuse for a double dip would be either a new format (so the ST blu-ray would qualify) or a reasonable gap in time like at least 10 years.

I don't really have a problem with multiple dipping as long as the various versions are not done blatantly to rip of the consumer.
My latest peeve is with the Avatar release.
It comes out on DVD/Blu-ray bare bones, a few months later they release it with all the extras.
I believe there is now an extended directors cut and I'm sure sooner or later there will be a 3D version, THAT is what I have issues with.
The Trek stuff I don't mind because of the tech update.
If they did a bare bones Blu-ray version, then a few months later release one with all the goodies, then I'd have issues.
And I realize no one is putting a gun to my head and making me buy the first one that is out but come on, let's not blatantly rip off the consumer.

They may be available, but they are by far the worst transfers possible (Not from film negatives, which are available, but from the 1993 Laserdiscs.) And No, the 'GOUT' versions will not be available on Blu-ray.

No plans for non-special edition on Blu-ray. I finally caved and purchased the SW DVDs a few years back WITHOUT the "O-OT" because, of course, Lucas said he would NEVER release them in any form again. That, of course, was a lie, and as I had already given in and bought the Shitty Editions once, didn't feel like buying them again just to get a second-rate transfer of the films Star Wars, Empire and Jedi, so I'm in no hurry to give Lucasfilm any more cash, thank you.
So yes, I am a fool, but not for the reason you specify.

The Star Wars theatrical cuts will undoubtedly be released on Blu-ray, but not until everyone unaware of that inevitable fact has already bought the special editions.
I recall some online boycott of the Lord of the Rings Blu-ray because they only included the theatrical cut without an option to view the extended cut. I don't know how much it hurt but I like the retaliation!

Then you already have the remastered versions. Remastering means they cleaned up the prints. It doesn't mean they added new f/x. TOS-R are the episodes with new f/x, but the episodes had already been remastered several years ago.
What you presently have is the same set I have.

TOS looks fantastic, and despite some HD handwringing, the original effects are just as they've always been, a product of the 60s, but hardly unwatchable in 1080p.
Now, my only complaint is that given the meticulous nature of the remaster and production of new VFX, I'm still amazed that so much dirt remains on the image during transporter dissolves and viewscreen composites. Yes, the dirt, or hair is present in the original composite, but it's a freeze-frame! It's not going anywhere, so would not have been difficult to paint away!
All in all this is a very minor quibble, but when the rest of the ep looks SO pristine, it just stands out like a sore thumb
I'm not so sure. That set was just a repackaging of the original 2-episode DVDs from '99 to '01.
Yes, they were "remastered" for that dvd release - and done well for that time from the best film elements and a decent cleanup, but those weren't done in high definition. The Blu-rays were done from the negatives in hi-def and with better cleanup.
Also, remember that seasons one and two of TOS Remastered was originally released on the HD-DVD format with Toshibas help before that format died (or really, when Toshiba surrendered) . But, they only contained the CGI'd versions of the episodes.
As nice as the regular DVDs looked, the Blu-rays are worlds better.
They had announced they were going to release it... then Toshiba pulled the plug on HD-DVD.

The clamshell dvds look fine on my tv. When is good enough good enough?
Had I lots of dough and a flat screen and a blu-ray and the new dvds, they'd look nicer than what I own. But my happiness level wouldn't go up. And in a month they'd just be my old possessions. Until a new system comes out that looks better and I purchased the re-re-re-mastered discs or chips or clots or whatever we're calling them then.
No thanks.
