This is the exchange...USS Carolina was mentioned from a fake transmission, se we have no clue what it even was suppose to have been.
Which is why I list it as unseen... just like the Farragut, Intrepid, Republic, Valiant and Yorktown. There is no more or less weight to the name than any of those other ships in TOS (except that it is given "USS" before it, which some others haven't).We still have no clue what it was. Just a name of a Federation ship.
Are you saying the Carolina is a ship like the Enterprise or another ship in Starfleet? This is the exchange...USS Carolina was mentioned from a fake transmission, se we have no clue what it even was suppose to have been.Uhura: Mr. Scott, another distress call... from the USS Carolina. That makes it a real ship even if it was part of a fake transmission. This is why we cross check our work first.
Scott: Ignore it.
Uhura: The Carolina is registered in this sector.

But the fact that early fan publications forgot it has meant that most fans don't include it in discussions like this. That is why I prefer doing my own research and collecting my own raw data rather than relying on others.
But, clearly an assumption on my part, there is no fact about what kind of ship that is, only it's location. We don't even know if it's a Star Fleet vessel or a Federation vessel.
Antares was intended to be a merchant vessel (TOS-R got that wrong)

...Despite the officers wearing Starfleet uniforms? Old ones, to be sure, but part of Picard's crew wearing early-season uniforms didn't make them civilians. And some of Kirk's own folks had those uniforms during the earliest post-pilot adventures.

Why not? Just like in real life.

So THATs what Santa claus does most of the year....
That's Captain Santa Claus.
So anybody can impersonate a Starfleet officer? Hmm. Does that mean that the officers of the Huron were civilians, too?
Merchant Marine officers in uniform are not that different from Naval officers in uniform. The differences are usually the insignialm and other details on their uniforms.
It was sugested that Antares crew's patch was that of the Merchant Marine, while the patch used on USS Enterprise was the Starfleet patch (rather than just for that one ship).

The uniforms with the butt patch?
Well, it presents quite a practical problem. Kirk can go to a random planet and tell the colony there to relocate two worlds to the left, hut, hut, hut, now MOVE or I'll huff and puff and blow the colony away. But so, apparently, can Ramart...
Police forces have no patience for impersonators. Why would militaries, especially ones that act as de facto police forces?
