So I watched TNG through last week and began DS9 this week

1st time to ever (and last) to watch Sub Rosa.
Many times for MAH.

I know Move Along is widely panned but its really not THAT BAD. Speaking as bad as Sub Rosa, Masks, and Shades of Gray, and Spock's Brain. Its nice to see Quark begging and hey it got some type of award for best hair designs. Party in back. So I'll put it you guys. Is Move Along Home better than Sub Rosa?

I like "Move Along Home" more as an additional introduction to Gamma Quadrant technology early in the series. If some species' games were this advanced, what was the rest of their technology like? Tosk and his hunters had already made an impressive splash, and this added to it nicely to eventually show what a formidable force the Dominion had to be. "Sub Rosa," on the other hand, was just a bad romance novel with Trek characters.

I would rather watch Move Along Home. At least it opened up some intriguing possibilities for the Gamma Quadrant with these unknown civilizations with bizarre technology and unusual ways of doing things, and whatnot. I wonder what ever happened to the Wadi. They never show up again in 'cannnnnnon.' So maybe they were conquered by the Dominion.

None of those episodes were horrible to me. The "Of course not; it's just a game!" ending in Move Along Home was great, Masks and Spock's Brain were cheesy fun, Shades of Grey was just a clip show (something sitcom fans at the time were very used to), and Sub Rosa...came out when I was a teenage boy and thus able to appreciate Gates MacFadden's...performance.

None are likely even in my top 100 (150? 200?) Star trek episodes, but they're fine. I'd certainly watch any of them over Dear Doctor or Author Author or Code of Honor or Threshold or Profit & Lace or Homeward or...

I don't hate either episode as much as some people but if I had to pick I'd watch Sub Rosa again, it had a nice, creepy atmosphere. Move Along Home's "it was all just a dream game" ending was a bit silly, why didn't they tell Quark no one was in danger when he was almost shitting his pants halfway through the game?

In an earlier draft of the script, Bashir wouldn't have been returned with the other players and Quark would have had to sacrifice his winnings to get him back. There were a number of elements intended to make the the virtual reality of Chula seem more strange and legitimately threatening to Sisko's group, but the fact that the show was having budget problems led to some of them being trimmed.

I think Move Along Home is much better than Sub Rosa. MAH may be one of DS9’s worst episodes, but that’s only because DS9 doesn’t really have crappy episodes.

IMO, the worst DS9 episode is Melora, and it’s still better than Sub Rosa.

That's worse than the ending we got. Sisko, Kira and Dax return but the Wadi declare they've taken Bashir hostage and want money? That would make them A) criminals and B) stupid criminals because they commit a crime in front of the station's commanding officer. At least with the ending we got it makes sense why the Wadi weren't arrested, it was a game and a misunderstanding, still not a great episode and in typical tv fashion the misunderstanding happened due to a lack of communication and strategic withholding of information but it did make sense ... kinda.

"MOVE ALONG HOME" is unquestionably a far superior episode against "Sub Rosa".

I have made many posts defending this episode, and I will keep doing so. I wrote this in another 'defend the episode' thread.

I even did it with some tweaking of the song...

Allamaraine! Let's count to four...
1. The concept is fantastic. How many of us have wanted to actually be in one of their favorite games?

2. It's an early illustration of just how advanced the Gamma Quadrant is technologically. Before this, we only had the Tosk hunters, who also proved very technologically advanced.

3. This is THE moment when Quark turned from being just another Ferengi to a layered, complex character. His pleading with Falow was definitely a turning point with Quark.

4. Our Starfleet heroes had only their wits and deductive reasoning skills to help them. Too often, we see Starfleet officers technobabble their way out of scenarios. This was a refreshing change of pace.

Then three more...
5. While their physical appearance was nothing special, the Wadi's costumes were very memorable. Among the most brightly colored ones I've seen in the franchise.

6. I don't care what anyone says, that tune was catchy.

7. One of the rare times in the show we hear Avery Brooks sing. The man has a great voice.

Now, do you see?
Will you say, "He convinced me"?

Seems to me if you’re going to compare MAH with an episode from another series, “Plato’s Stepchildren” would be a better example than “Sub Rosa.” What I found repulsive about MAH was the lack of consequences to the Wadi who just went on their merry way, but even more, the pointless terror and humiliation the crew went through-- the bridge officers and especially Quark. We do see how he really does care about saving the crew, but the groveling went too far. When asked in an interview what episode he most disliked, Avery Brooks immediately started the ‘Allemaraine’ chant.

To me, “Sub Rosa” came across like the TNG version of a Halloween story--I never rewatch it, had forgotten Beverly said her grandmother was 100 when she had that quasi-affair. I guess Anij was at least 300 years old when she and Picard were drawn to each other in Insurrection.
