Organising your books

Like the Shadows I embrace chaos. My books are basically placed upon the selves where ever they fit in. (Although most of my trek books are in roughly the same area). Since my room is an abominable mess at the current time, my books shall remain in uncertain order.

All of this is rather amusing seeing as I'm a librarian...

It's a private revolt against the ordered tyranny of the public library system. :techman:

I came across a video in which a guy said not to use the Dewey system because it has thousand of numbers. Because I only have about 800 books I only use the first three digits of a Dewey number but I think one could simplify it even further by only using the first two digits. For example, in the 590s are animal books with spiders being under 595, birds 598 and mammals 599 but one could just use 59 and have all these animal groups under one number.

^That would be '58 Zoology' in the decimal system used here.

How I organise my books.... I don't think you'd call the way I have my books 'organised'!

Graphic novels and comics are put together and organised alphabetically after the name of whomever drew them (as opposed to whomever wrote them) [from Arno to Zentner] -and chronology.

My Iain M. Banks are on their own (in order of chronology)
[And since I only recently started reading(/collecting) Iain Banks, those have just been squeezed on top of my receiver.]

The rest of my collection is packed in big crates in the cellar!
I am, however, planning to go to IKEA sometime this year to get some BILLYs (like these) for the bedroom (that feng-shui-woman is -mildly put- nuts!).

Oh, I have a comment to the dust-jacket thing going on in this thread: I HATE hardbacks! -way overpriced and way too big and clumsy I hate having to find room for a hardback in between more modestly sized volumes.

ETA: Before I bought my shelves (the very same as in the picture) at 16 or 17, my room must've resembled Steven Grout's* -a maze of books with a pile of clothing and a bed in one corner

All of this is rather amusing seeing as I'm a librarian...
My dad is an electrician... do you think we had all our cables tugged safely away in my childhood-home???

_______________
*) Steven Grout is a character in Iain Banks' "Walking on Glass" -which I have only recently finished.

I organize them first by use (leisure or work), then by subject (fantasy, sci-fi, historic fiction, essays, etc.), last by author and/or series. I do allow for some leeway for size, but only if they look horridly mismatched when placed close to each other.

My books are like my mental state: a disorderly colorful mess strewn about willy-nilly, but I know exactly where everything is.

^That's what I was aiming for. Only, the last time I 'organised' according to my mental state my sister almost had me committed (and it wasn't for lack of trying that she didn't succeed!).

trekkiedane yours seems to be bit different from my Dewey numbers

Yeah, good to know though! -should I ever venture into an American library, I would only be a little lost, not TOTALLY

I used to have my books organized, but now I'm in a 2 bedroom condo. I have books in the dining room (two shelves), living room (two shelves), spare room (8 shelves), and my bedroom (two shelves). My place is full of books. I often go back and re-read them years later - that's why I keep them. I try to keep them in order, especially ones that are a series. I have some stored by subject. Basically, I have fiction, non-fiction, with subsets of types (series). :D

Well, I am seeing a shrink tomorrow, and I have got a Kindle now, I wonder what will happen to my bookshelves?

When I was a bookseller I organize my books like a book store. Separated by category and then by author or subject. Now its just by author and subject.

The war between my books and my wife's knickknacks is on going. I fear the UN might be called in.

Then you have nothing to fear but beatings with a wet noodle and wordy words--and ongoing atrocities, of course.

I have this guy on my bookcase. I still need an better bottle to put in him, either a clear bottle which I would fill with coloured beads (or similar) or a nice blue coloured bottle.

He has a diploma and is carrying books so he belongs on the bookcase. I bought a similar item today (a Scotsman playing bagpipe for my bedside table)

The new book goes on top of the older book, or where it will and sometimes where I last put it down after I'm done reading it.
