Order of Operations on a BLT....

You "BLT with mayonnaise" (or Miracle Whip) people

Don't throw us mayo people in with the Miracle Whip people! :klingon:
Exactly!

:scream:

Besides...mustard on bacon? Seriously?

That's messed up.

;)

It never occurred to me to put mustard on a BLT before this thread. Now I have to try it - I do like mustard - and like *JUSTKATE* said - It's bacon!

Here's the deal: I grew up eating BLTs with mustard - the way God intended BLTs to be, assuming He has condiment preferences, not that I'm saying He does. But then I went out into The World, and I found that almost everybody else has them with mayonnaise or Miracle Whip and that virtually every restaurant in my beloved country serves them that way, too.

(Allow me to digress for a second here to say that I agree that mayo is preferable to Miracle Whip in almost every conceivable way, but that doesn't change the fact that neither of them belongs on a BLT. Or a hamburger, for that matter. Back OT...)

So I tried to conform. I tried to give up BLTs with mustard, I tried to like them with mayo, I tried. And yet through it all, mustard called out to me - "Come back, Kate!" would come the plaintive cry. "Commmmmme back! You know that I'm the only one for youuuuuuuuu!"

(In a similar way, if I might digress again, I grew up eating french toast with powdered sugar rather than syrup. It was a huge shock - really - when I discovered almost nobody except direct blood relatives eats it that way. I tried to follow the crowd on french toast as well, but I failed there, too. Back OT...)

And mustard was right - it really was the only one for me, at least when it comes to BLTs. So nowadays, I just order my BLTs plain and ask for mustard on the side. And yes, mustard and pork, particularly smoked pork, belong together. What God has joined together let no man put asunder.

^^^ My mom always served french toast with powdered sugar, too. (But also butter and syrup for those who wanted it.)

Best thing to put on French toast is a 50/50 mixture of powdered sugar and cinnamon. Syrup is for pancakes.

I reached the age of twenty-five thinking that it was normal to have ketchup with french toast. Families can be strange.

The french toast my family makes isn't like normal french toast, so it's actually pretty good.

Grilled onions instead of tomatoes, with added avocado and a packet of in-n-out burger spread in place of mayo. Toasted sourdough/spread/lettuce/bacon/onions/avocado/bacon/spread/toasted sourdough.

I would totally try this if you would ship me the In N Out spread. It sounds delicious.

Goodness, I miss California.
Most supermarkets have some variant of the spread on sale either in the deli or condiment aisle. If not, try mixing mayo, ketchup and thousand island or Russian dressing to taste, which is pretty close.

Of course, I go online in the middle of the night while my dorm room food stash is empty, the dining hall is closed, and I'm hungry, and what do I find? I food thread... So of course I had to go read it... Curses! :(

That sounds SO good...

Can't we jsut have a bacon sandwich?

Indeedy...

Grand Rustic White bread loaf straight out of the oven, sliced in half

Melt butter and spread thinly over the bread

Add a pack of high quality cured bacon (smoked or not, it's down to the mood) some of which is extra crispy, some softer - for texture differences - onto the bottom slice

Splurge a large dollop of brown sauce on top

Top with the other slice of the rustic

Cut into manageable bits

Sit in front of the TV/Paper

Gorge

^Sounds good w/ freshly baked bread - what is brown sauce?

*JUSTKATE* don't apologize for being somewhat of a food iconoclast! It's fun and mind-bendy to learn all these new things!

^^ In the states I think you call it "Steak Sauce" but it's basically a brown coloured sauce made with tomatoes, spices, vinegar, raisins, anchovies etc.

Here in the UK the best (but not the Big Daddy) is HP: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HP_Sauce

I love the stuff and other than on Bacon sarnies its best used to make homemade hamburgers/meatballs :D

I've always felt that lettuce was for salads, not sandwiches. So I've never been a fan of the BLT.

However, I will share my thoughts on the perfection of sandwiches, the turkey club.

My turkey club, assembled from top to bottom:

toast
mayo
bacon
tomato
mayo
toast
mayo
bacon
turkey
mustard
toast

I was expecting a graph or something when I opened this thread. :(
Yeah, “Order of Operations on a BLT” sounds like some military something-or-other.

“Company -- present sandwiches!”

:lol::lol::lol:

Looks like our A-1 Steak sauce by Heinz - I love it on just about any meat - will have to try on a BLT! So many dining options - so little time !

C'mon. It's called bacon, lettuce, and tomato for a reason. Those are the instructions for putting the sandwich together. Bacon, then lettuce, then tomato. On toast. Mayo is a must. Maybe a very thin slice of sweet onion. And, guacaomole is actually good, too.

Sometimes, I also like to use a bun instead of toast and put a hamburger and a slice of cheese on my BLT. Of course, it's not a BLT anymore, is it? :)

^ yeah, all those other sandwiches sound really good, but they don't meet the basic requirement of a Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato sandwich.

On a BLT... no. I think Mayo really is the only way to go. Brown Sauce and salad mix like oil and water. Brown sauce is for meat-and-starch meals.

What I do recommend for a BLT is french mustard mayonnaise. Generous mayo with a hint of a mustard edge. Works wonderfully well with the smokeyness of the bacon!

That should be a movie. :rommie:
