Orci & Kurtzman pick favorite Trek novels

^Why quote Data's line from "Relics" instead of the Scotty line from "By Any Other Name" that it was a callback to?

Congrats, Christopher! That must have made your day!

And, boy, it's seriously cool that the movie people are obviously familiar with the books!

Very nice - congratulations, Christopher!

And JD, with the new sort of tone the new movie looks to be establishing, I think Vanguard fits very well with it - whether they acknowledge it onscreen or not.

I think if there's one unifying thread between those four novels, it's their focus on the characters, their backgrounds, and their relationships. And that's what this movie is basically about: exploring the origins of these characters, where they came from, and how their relationships formed.

That occurred to me.

I'd say that they have a 50% success rate with their list of novels here. PD and ExM were both excellent, in their very different ways. BD was okay - it's probably my favourite Carey novel, but that's kind of damning it by faint praise. Having said that, the bits with young Kirk were the best part of it, so I suppose that's not a bad influence to have on a movie dealing with, er, young Kirk.

SW I found very disappointing, if only for the reason that it had an intriguing premise and I usually like Duane's novels. For my money, Sarek by AC Crispin was a much better novel covering relatively similar territory and would have tied in nicely with this movie.

Still, good to see that they are taking note of Trek lit.

I'm thrilled that "Ex Machina" was on their reading list. Loved it, even though CLB killed off one of my old fanfic regulars!

If it ever gets reprinted, I'd love to see it coupled in an omnibus with TMP's novelization.

Way to go Chris...

To think, if they read the little shout out in front of it, they must have seen how trekbbs helped out, if ever so little... Perhaps they will lurk around here.

I saw Spock's World at a local private bookstore near campus (which I have decided is the trek lit treasure trove). I'm going to have to pick it up.

There are a few Trek insiders on TrekBBS, though not necessarily in this forum. Rick Sternbach, Mike Okuda, and Andrew Probert all post on Trek Tech and some of the other boards. And I think Mike Sussman has shown up on the BBS occasionally.

Wow, I didn't realize any BTS people other than the authors and editors came here.

Funny, I have it completely the other way 'round. Loved SW and have reread it many times, didn't so much care for Sarek.
