How my OJ must roll

"Natural" is a hugely misused, misunderstood, and overrated term anyway.

Indeed it is. As I like to yell at the TV when I see a commercial advertising some kind of "safe because it's all natural" herbal remedy: "Hey! Yeah, you, lady! Uranium's all natural too, and I don't see you rubbing that all over your face!"

I'm sorry, I have my father's genes.

I always say that stuff. Since I live in a big hippy area I'm trolling practically every time I open my mouth.

Lucky! Where I live, people don't give a shit about their health.

:lol:I know the feeling. The really hard part is when it's people you love and care about falling victim to this sort of nonsense. My friend and roommate is into everything "all natural" and any "natural" supplements she can get her hands on. Because, you know, she has to get rid of all the toxins that the people who sell cleansing diets, supplements, drinks, foot pads, and enemas have convinced her are "building up" inside her body. I have a very dear friend who is a reiki practitioner, and who won't use the microwave because it "chemically alters your food." I tried to explain to her that the definition of cooking is chemically altering food, but she didn't get it, and I really had to resist the urge to show her the research showing that microwaving potatoes before cooking them reduces carcinogenic chemicals.

As long as there's no pulp, I don't care where it comes from. :p

This. And honestly, I usually only drink orange juice with vodka or some other alcohols mixed into it, so it's not like I have a glass every day for my health.

Oh yes the "toxins", every other person I know is hellbent on ridding their body of them via sticking candles in their ears or some other silliness. The weird thing is a lot of them smoke (but rollies..because those don't have chemically treated filters..).

I have my prejudices though. I probably could not be friends with a Reiki practitioner. I grew up in a health food/alternative therapies household where literally every person I knew surfed the fads of current miracle foods and demon toxins. As well as, to borrow from the Ghostly thread, believing in ANY spiritual story anyone came out with because that was "their truth". None of this ever stuck amazingly. I do have several very religious friends (evangelical Christians) but I think what really upsets me about alternative health practitioners is that they charge lots of money for malarkey. I know most actually believe in it quite sincerely but it repulses me so much I would have a lot of trouble being friends with anyone who made their living off it.

When it comes to fruits and vegetables, I'm a one-world idealist. Oranges know no borders!

And I prefer my orange juice with a bit of pulp in it.

. . . I've not drunk coke for more than 8 years, it was the smell of someone's coffee (can't stand coffee) mixing with the smell of the caffine in my cola that put me off.
Caffeine has a smell?

Tropicana says "100% Florida Orange Juice" on the jug. I assume that means what I think it does, but hadn't really given it much thought. I just like Tropicana best.

I drink about 2 gallons a week.

That's quite a bit of juice, some 1.25ltr a day.

Tell them that's what they have a liver and a pair of kidneys for.

You need two things to clean out your body: water and fiber.

That's why, whenever I do a "body cleanse," I just eat a bunch of chili and drink a lot of grape juice. :p

Oh believe me, I think quacks are as immoral and disgusting as you do. This particular friend, however, is a true believer. She really thinks that reiki is real and works, and she doesn't charge money for it (she lives on a commune now, surprise, surprise). I would certainly be suspicious of her moral person were she not so genuinely committed to her magical beliefs (this is the same friend who wept when she learned that there may be two extra astrological signs). The only belief she holds that actually ever threatened our friendship is her antivaccinationist stance, and because she is a dear friend I simply told her I could never talk to her about it again; it makes me too angry, and I don't want to lose her. All her woo woo beliefs make her sound like an utter idiot, but she is a prime example of the human ability to compartmentalize beliefs and rationalize away evidence. She is an otherwise intelligent, witty, funny, sweet, and genuine person -- that she can be so intelligent, and believe in such stupid things still amazes me.

Two extra astrological signs?

Oh, it was some nonsensical upset in the astrological community a couple years ago about there possibly have been a "mistake" and there being extra signs or something. It's all so stupid that it's not even worth googling.

Simply Orange (high pulp) is pretty much the only orange juice I drink. It's kind of expensive, but awesome. The wiki says they're a "major purchaser of Florida oranges" along with imports from Brazil. I'm fine with that. Personally, I think it would be better if people were content not getting produce from overseas or out of season... but it's not something I'm passionate about.
