Opinions on The Orville

The Orville is something that I feel is kinda neccessary in our current sci-fi meta. There are too many shows, movies and books focusing on dystopian futures, ones where humanity is on its last legs, dying as a species. While I agree that this is kinda the state of the world now, sci fi is at its heart meant to represent ALL possible futures. There is always the choice for us humans to change our ways, and better ourselves and our society. While many will call me naive for believing in Gene Roddenberry's vision of a better future, and others will call visions of the future like that 'absurd' or 'unobtainable' I'll ask you why you think a world the way it is now is a better place that that vision. Dreams are just a possible future, and the Orville encompasses Roddenberry's dream of a utopian, united future in exemplary fashion. While the jokes are immature, and the show called 'TNG with the numbers filed off', it is in some ways what TNG and Trek could never be.

Classic trek never evaluated the issues of it's own time in a meaningful way. At least, the issues that were uncomfortable. Gender, society, religeon...these were issues that were not covered in a meaningful way on classic Trek. The Orville covers these in a way that does it justice. McFarlane is known for this kind of approach. Family Guy makes commentary on many controversial and often ridiculed or discussed topics including organised religion, 9/11, politics, celebrity culture, sex, abortion, creationism, anarchism, journalism, and human trafficking. The Orville has only had one season so far, but it has built a universe that is everything Trek is and was, as well as adding whole new layers to the onion.

So, as a summary, I think that the Orville is a great show that is both a affectionate parody and a homage to the things that made star trek great. It has a cast of characters that are interesting and diverse, and has great potential for it's future. I would reccomend it to any member of this site who even remotely enjoyed TNG or TOS.

Well, I mean, they were in kind of a pickle in the 60's. What with censors having pretty much all the power. Though they did deal with issues of the day in their own way through allegory.

I really like The Orville. But the conditions the two shows were made under make comparisons a bit unfair.

Great writeup. I agree. And I wonder what Roddenberry would have thought of the show? He'd likely be humbled by it.

:vulcan: Eh, Orville isn't exactly an ogre when it comes to layers. I mean, I guess by just existing it has one "layer" by default, but its no Shrek is what I'm saying. It is as unpleasant as an onion though, and I could see it making someone cry through irritation, so maybe there is more to the "Orville = Onion" idea then I thought at first.

"Roddenberry" and "humbled" are not two words that pair well with each other.

I'm pretty sure he'd sue for a cut.

Well, maybe if this had been in the 80's, I could see him being not too happy, but I do think he'd be happy to see that his vision has now continued on in another form. Imitation is a sincere form of flattery, and I would think he'd be pretty entertained by The Orville.
