Opinions on The Orville

That's a good point. It felt like a great stress relief too. People can do some funny things during tense situations. Plus, I think it's a great way to explore different topics.

One of the few things I did like about Flash this season was the idea that humor is a good stress relief. If you're in a dire situation, you're really going to stop acting like yourself, be it humor or fear? Yeah there's the whole idea of compartmentizing, but the human element is always going to be there.

With Orville, I expected family Guy humor. What I got was people I would love to hang out with. It was relatable in that way.

It's really a crew of misfits
I'm not sure "misfits" is entirely accurate. These people are just ordinary people. They are competent and suited to their jobs, they're just not the best of the best or paragons of nobility and virtue. They're average everyday people doing their job and having a life, they're not the sort of goal obsessed workaholics that tend to make up an alarming amount of Starfleet crews. Hell, the only one on the Orville crew who comes close to being a workaholic is Bortus, and that's only because he doesn't get along with his spouse.

Yep, and I think people who are avoiding this because of that exact "Family Guy humor" expectations are missing out on something special. There is juvenile humor, but that's mostly in the first few episodes and the jokes get better as the season progresses. I was really happy with the kind of balance that Seth McFarlane had achieved and ended up liking it far more than I thought I would. For me it went way above expectations.

Well the social media episode also had a little juvenile humor, but when he explained why he was that way in a later episode it made all the sense in the world. Lamar really had some of the best character development of the first year.

I loved the character development throughout the show in general. Some fun and quirky characters that actually felt interesting for once, and actually had depth. It was the first show in a long time that I truly looked forward every week, wondering what each of the characters were up to. I hadn't felt that way with a show for quite some time.

Yeah, her strength isn't analogous to Vulcans at all. Vulcans are physically stronger as a result of their biology, even on their homeworld they are still strong. In the case of Alara and the Xeleyans, their homeworld has higher gravity than that of apparently the rest of the galaxy, meaning she is comparatively stronger than everyone else when in the lower gravity of other world and their ships. Were she on her homeworld, Alara probably wouldn't be much stronger compared to other Xeleyans.

I kind of see Alara as a meld of Klingon and Vulcan. She's definitely got the strength and I think she has an interesting culture as well, although they've been working the culture angle with Bortus's species too and he's somewhat Klingon as well.

As I understand it, high gravity was one of the early explanations for Superman's powers, before the flight power was developed for the Fleischer cartoons.

Yeah, high gravity explained his strength and ability to "leap tall buildings at a single bound."

One of the enjoyable things about The Orville is that by not being so solemn about what they're doing they can hand-wave "comic book science" this way. Most of the explanations for Spock's physiology were no more plausible than this; his "powers" were simply less exaggerated.

Honestly, the series almost seems like a remake of "STAR TREK NEXT GENERATION", with the exception of the humor.

Well, not if you pay attention. Most of the time when MacFarlane treads the same storylines he does the better job.

I really enjoy the orville, it's easy to watch entertainment. I think it is on a tightrope though of serious storytelling and slipping into spoof territory.

Guardians, firefly and other properties have shown you can have humour in sci fi without overdoing it so id like to see seth make the comedy just a bit more subtle.

Also dissapointed that Halston Sage is apparently gone?
