Opening Credits thus far...

In a thread in the XI forum we are discussing whether or not there will and should be opening credits for the new movie, or should it just dive in and do the credits at the end.

Up to now, what is your favorite Star Trek opening credits?

For me it will always be TMP, and the cool opening battle with VGER and the Klingons...

But my second pick may be a surprise. I like the opeing of STAR TREK V and the great scenery, and Kirk rock climbing. The music almost had a 'western' feel to is as the credits come in and out.

My least favorite, by far, is Nemesis.

I really like the opening of Generations with the wine bottle floating through space and then crashing onto the Ent-B for the ceremony just as the music swells.

I like that one as though. It is no secret on that I prefer GENERATIONS to FIRST CONTACT by leaps and bounds. And this is yet another reason...

I have to admit, I miss films having actual opening credits and main themes. (Or in the case of TMP, an overture as well!) The opening credits for TMP, TWOK, and FC all had nice themes, and the main themes for TVH and TUC certainly set the mood for the subsequent film.

Blame it on MTV..I do..

Yes, but these things will have a renaissance one day. You know, a film that really wants to go GRAND will have an overture and such. And then others will follow. These are trends, and they change.

That said, I don't think one can rank opening credits. I mean they are names and titles, right? And since most Trek opening sequences are over a generic starfield, what's the difference? Graphics-wise, I like what they did in First Contact with the names being "assimilated", but there are many many films that had main titles that very a lot more interesting than that.

^ Is that what the desired idea was with the FC title sequence?? (Seriously!)

I never got that impression -- in fact, I recall being completely not impressed with the FC title sequence in the theatre. It looked like something any of us could do on Powerpoint, really.

Yea while I loved the music in the FC title sequence it really needed some better imagery or something during the music.

Only the "STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT" title was supposed to look like it was being assimilated. The rest of the credits just seemed to be coming into focus as they floated out of Picard's eye. Or something like that.

^ Really? Well then apparently I haven't seen that film in a while... But you're probably right. I take back what I said.

For me, the genius of the FC credits is revealed at the end.

As the title sequence runs, I get the impression the titles are flowing out of my imagination, through, and up on to the screen. Sort of like I am projecting them from my thoughts.

Then at the end, when the camera zooms out of Picards head, it's like the credits were happening inside his mind all the time and I was witnessing them as a sort a dream he was having which, marvelously, it turns out, he was.

Excellent title design!

Hmm I have not seen FC in a couple years. It does sound better then I remember by your description. Will have to watch it again soon!

I really do like movies with opening credits sequences, mainly because I like the film to have an actual main title theme that plays at the beginning. Most of Star Trek's films have had good opening credits, IMHO.

However, given what I've seen of Trek XI so far -- and, admittedly, that's not much -- it appears J.J. Abrams is going for the modern, MTV generation, quick cut, fast paced, all action, people have 2-second attention spans approach to the film and, therefore, I don't expect it to have opening credits.

Dude..your post was too long.

I hope it goes for a good and interesting main theme....

Although I think we'll get 'Welcome to the Jungle'.

You do not make jokes about such things. There are, after all, directors like Michael Bay out there who will just throw some hard rock song into a scene in their films for no good reason! Thankfully as far as I know, J.J. Abrams has refrained from such nonsense in his work.
