Opening credits question

Mr. Laser Beam

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
All those things we see happening to Cerritos in the opening credits...all that is just supposed to be a metaphor, isn't it?

Because Memory Alpha seems to think that scene where Romulan and Borg ships are fighting each other was a real event.

Of course, we have already learned that the classic opening speech by Shatner or Stewart is in fact the Starfleet Captain's Oath, as absolutely nonsensical as that is... (And also a Cochrane quote, which makes a bit more sense.)

So there's a high risk of credits being for real. Perhaps we shall soon learn that Captain Kirk's official alias while undercover on primitive planets was William Shatner, or that Starfleeters are obligated to change their name while enrolling or enlisting, and Mariner was born Tawny Newsome?

And? The Borg are credited with victories in ST:FC: they advance, Starfleet retreats. Earth is still there, as is the bulk of the Federation. Losing to the Borg isn't terminally fatal for real. Even if it hurts.

Memory-Alpha does that with all the show openings.

Well except Picard and Discovery since those are heavily stylized.

I figured they're real events, but what happens to the Cerritos I take to be tongue in cheek -- falling into the black hole, engines knocked out by scraping an asteroid, etc... The message is: "Ach -- I'm bad at this!" (in the voice of Groundskeeper Willie).

Presumably this is where the Romulans got the Artifact in Picard?

As far as we can tell, the Borg are equal opportunity pillagers. They went for Romulans in "The Neutral Zone"; they may have gone for them before and after, too. And done the same thing with Klingons, and perhaps Cardassians and Breen and whatnot, too.

The timing with the Cerritos could neatly fit the PIC reference, though. I can't see the Romulans winning that round, but I could see the Borg moving on after the engagement, and then having one of theirs fall for the corrupting effect of having assimilated a True Believer, after which the Romulans could claim the wreckage as shown.

I'm not sure I understand. Why wouldn't those be “real” events?

Because a wacky, zany show like this would be just the type to intentionally go over the top - even in the credits.

Meaning, they're like "Oh, woe is us, let's show us getting our asses kicked over and over even if it didn't happen".

...Which is why it's so disturbing to learn that "Space!! The Final Front-Ear!!" is in fact an in-universe thing.

So far, we haven't learned that the theme music would be the Starfleet Anthem (and we have learned it's not the UFP one), but we can't rest assured of this never happening.
