Open Secrets- review with no spoilers. (spoilers from prev. books)

Not sure if anyone else has started a review thread, if so sorry, I've overlooked it.

First of all, I've enjoyed much of Ward's work so in order to read Open Secrets I had to correct an error. I accidently had the books shipped to my address from four years ago and couldn't get anyone to change the address. So yesterday between my first and second class I drove 90 miles round trip to pick up the books.

Started reading it when I arrived back at work and finished it by 1900hrs.

The opening is interesting and quickly leads into a flashback covering the immediate aftermath of Reyes arrest. The story can be divided into several subplots, including the Reyes court-martial, the Pennington-M'Benga, and the meta-gene plot among others.

Overall, I reallly liked the court-martial subplot, which does an excellen job of dealing with the lead up to the trial and the actual trial itself, without going into a blow by blow account. I thought it was extremely realistic including the way the trial ends.

The Pennington-M'Benga plot I thought was bit weaker, but blame part of that on the "Ancient Vulcan traditions/ceremony" aspects which has been built into canon within the series and movies. However, it is well handled and at least fits into probable canon concepts.

The metagene plot was alright, but I don't qiute find it as interesting as the other sections within the books.

Excellent examples of "cameo events" are placed throughout the book and well done, as well as dealing with the other characters in the series.

Overall, I'll say the ending was a complete surprise, believing that the resolution of of the ending should at least another 2 good books.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading the novel and I'd drive another 90 miles round trip to get the next book. (However, think I'll fix the flaw so its delivered to my address instead.)

So do we know for sure yet if the Shedai are actually gone for good or not? I don't remember Reap the Whirlwind very well (which is why I'm rereading it right now) but I thought that the Shedai were pretty much dealt with by the end.

The Wanderer appears, and the good one from Reap the Whirlwind (whose designation I forget, sorry), but no other Shedai.

This was a great book, but it felt off for a while, until I realized that Kevin Dilmore was not there. Not that there's anything wrong with just Ward (In the Name of Honor was also great), but I am used to a feel of the writing.

One tangential question for Dayton Ward if he reads this. In the SCE ebook about the Lovell and the Delta Triangle (Where Time Stands Still), there's a Captain Sivok. Is this T'Prynn's father Sivok, or a different Sivok?

Oh, and that was one great shocking ending. Had my mouth hanging open, then I said, "WTF?" I mean literally. "Double-You Tee Eff."

I was fortunate to get it early and as ToddCam and I noted, the ending really is a shocker.

I will state that the original TOS series plots get a few nice cameos, thought they were well integrated.

That is an excellent question.

I'm a big fan of this series, my copy should be here today or tomorrow...pretty anxious to read Open Secrets....book three was quite a cliffhanger will be tough to beat.

Very anxious to read this book - I hope that (unlike Treason), it will at least be stocked by NYC-area book stores! :scream:

picked mine up today while I was in my local book shop getting NF: Treason which I will read first.

Looking forward to it, not just as a VAN fan but also as someone who's been on a TOS kick the last couple of months, both in reading and writing (hint, hint).

Just finished it. If you thought Reap the Whirlwind was a game-changer, hold on to your hats.

Like I said in the What Are You Reading thred, I got this today, and since I can't wait, I put RTW away and started it. I'm very curious to see what it is that happens in this one that is so shocking to everybody.

I'd say that's a bad idea, since this one spoils so much from Reap the Whirlwind.

Unless JD means he's re-reading RTW in "preparation" to read Open Secrets, then it's not so bad.

Yeah, I'd been rereading RTW, but once I saw the recap in the beginning of Open Secrets I decided to just skip right to it.
