Open Secrets- review with no spoilers. (spoilers from prev. books)

Wow awesome book, very anxious for the next one. Absolutely love this series easily my favorite Trek book series. One quick question though....is there a definite finale to the plot with the shedai and the taurus reach or is it just going as you write...I would imagine that there is a definite ending already set and its just a matter of revealing the plot through several books.

When will the next one take place following the body of the book, or the epilouge/proglouge one year later?

There is some overlap in the time periods covered by the Open Secrets and Precipice — just less than three months, by my estimate — showing different points of view on some of the same events. Precipice then continues from the point where Open Secrets ends.

At the moment, David, "Precipice" is my most eagerly-awaited novel from this point on for 2009... If you can by some chance just mind meld with me over the net and clue me in early, it would be most appreciated. Enough of this waiting business!

The last chapter or the prologue/epilogue?

Overall, the book is a pretty good read, even if it is a little more "average" than the previous three in terms of excitement and big happenings. The book didn't really become a page-turner for me until about the time the court-martial started and a certain long space journey was over.

It has a nice symmetry with the prologue, but I can't say I was too surprised by it. If you don't see a body, then they aren't dead, especially in science fiction. I am glad for Rana's sake that Reyes is still out there.

I'd give Open Secrets an 8/10. It's well done, but it has room for improvement. I do look forward to one day being able to read the entire Vanguard saga from beginning to end. I think it will be quite a ride!

I was thinking about this as I was reading it. Don't you think we need a change-up pitch in the series once in a while? I do.

Well done, Dayton. I enjoyed it.

And I most definitely did NOT expect that ending!!

Mr. ward you write a really good book but I have a question about the attack on vangaurd station that you or david could answer. I know that the locknar class frigate protecting the station arrived during the main plot line of the book. But when did the two destroyers and the new miranda class frigate arrived in the area. Because there was no mention of additional fleet assets being deployed to help in the reach during the main section of the book.

As I've mentioned before, the change in pace for this book was deliberate. After three books of running around, pissing off the Shedai and having them blow shit up, and with certain plot developments which came to the fore at the end of Reap the Whirlwind, it was time to do something different.

To answer your question, luec, there is a gap of time between the final chapter(s) of the book and the epilogue, during which relations between the Empire and the Federation continue to deteriorate. Those additional ships would've been dispatched to the region during this period. Some of that will be touched upon in Precipice.

Dayton thank you for the answer Does david's next vangaurd book covers the gap bethind the ending of the main section of open secrets and the attack on the station in the prologue/epilogue. Second question is what year does the main section of the book end is it 2266 or 2267 because it started a year before the station attack.

Key events from that time period will be touched upon, yes :)

The bulk of the book unfolds over a period spanning late 2266/early-mid 2267.

^ To reiterate what Dayton said, Precipice will cover some key events in the roughly three months that elapse between the end of the last chapter of Open Secrets and its epilogue.

The time period covered by Precipice is January 3, 2267—December 29, 2267.

So that's, what, mid-second season to mid-third season? Here's hoping the Vanguard crew laugh hysterically over the report about Spock's brain.

Edit: My bad, that's actually mid-first season to mid-second season.

I'll be off to see if the stores here in Toronto have the book yet - they didn't earlier in the week - and I'll be back in to give my thoughts on it when I get the chance to go through it.

As an aside, is there a plan to do an In a Mirror, Darkly-esque take on the Terran Empire's equivalent of the Vanguard project?
